Tenerife, the club of Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Jesus Owono, will provide financial assistance to the one-year-old daughter of former player Jesus de Miguel at least until she reaches adulthood.
De Miguel died on Tuesday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest during Tenerife’s match against Andorra FC on Monday evening.
The striker lost consciousness following a heavy collision with the Andorran goalkeeper. He was taken to hospital by ambulance and had to be resuscitated immediately after his heart stopped.
De Miguel’s wife and their 16-month-old daughter were in the stadium when the incident happened. Tenerife said it would do everything possible to ease the family’s financial difficulties following his death.
“Our aim is to support the young girl. We want to be there for her, at least until she reaches adulthood,” Tenerife director Antonio Manuel Porro Granados told The Athletic.
The club acknowledged that financial assistance alone could not help the family overcome the loss of De Miguel.
“We will provide all the support possible, beyond our legal obligations,” Tenerife said. “In addition, we are exploring other ways to increase the financial assistance so that these circumstances – at least materially – weigh less heavily on their lives.
“Of course, it is inevitable that this will have a considerable and lasting impact.”
