Hossam Hassan’s Egypt future settled after landmark World Cup campaign

The Egyptian Football Association has confirmed that Hossam Hassan will remain manager of the Egypt national team until 2030, extending his contract after the team’s historic run at the 2026 World Cup.

The agreement was formally signed on Tuesday following a decision by the association’s board to renew the contracts of the national team’s coaching staff.

The signing ceremony was attended by Egyptian Football Association president Hany Abou Rida, vice-president Khaled El-Drendly and secretary-general Mostafa Azzam. Hassan was joined by his brother Ibrahim Hassan, the team director, and administrative director Waleed Badr.

In a statement published on its official social media accounts, the association said the extension was intended to provide stability for the national team’s technical staff and allow preparations to continue in line with its established objectives and plans.

Hassan took charge of Egypt in February 2024, replacing Portuguese manager Rui Vitoria. Since then, he has overseen a noticeable improvement in the team’s results and performances.

His most significant achievement came during the 2026 World Cup, when he guided Egypt to the finals and then led the Pharaohs into the last 16 for the first time in the country’s World Cup history.

Egypt produced a series of strong performances at the tournament before their campaign ended with an entertaining 3-2 defeat by Argentina.

The renewal also reflects Egypt’s return to contention at continental level, with Hassan maintaining consistency in the team’s results during his time in charge. That progress persuaded the Egyptian Football Association’s board to place its confidence in him for the next stage of the national team’s development.

His new contract is designed to take Egypt through a period that will include preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.

The association said the decision would give the coaching staff the opportunity to continue building on their work and preparing the team for those upcoming challenges.

Hassan’s appointment in 2024 came after Egypt’s decision to move on from Vitoria, who had been responsible for the team before him. Under Hassan, Egypt have made progress both in terms of results and performances, culminating in their historic last-16 appearance at the 2026 World Cup.

The Egyptian Football Association’s announcement formally settles the manager’s position and confirms that Hassan will lead the national team through the next phase of its international programme.
