Manchester City agree Enzo Fernandez deal as clubs race to complete deadline-day business

The summer transfer window enters its final day with Manchester City agreeing a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez in one of the biggest moves of the window, while Saudi Arabia international Ali Al-Bulaihi has joined Al-Shabab from Al-Hilal.

The agreement for Argentina international Fernandez is reported to be worth more than £125m, with the 25-year-old due to undergo a medical before completing his move to the Etihad Stadium.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that the deal had been completed after lengthy negotiations between the two Premier League clubs. If confirmed at that fee, Fernandez will become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, overtaking Sweden striker Alexander Isak’s £125m move from Newcastle United to Liverpool.

City had opened direct talks with Chelsea on Monday, according to The Sun, and Fernandez is set to reunite with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola as Manchester City boss at the Etihad during the summer.

In Saudi Arabia, Al-Shabab announced the signing of defender Ali Al-Bulaihi on a one-year contract. The club’s announcement on X attracted particular attention because it described the 35-year-old as “the big club of the capital” – a phrase used by Al-Hilal supporters to describe their own team.

Juventus are preparing to welcome German forward Nick Woltemade to Turin. The striker has arrived in the city and is expected to complete a medical before joining on loan for the current season, according to German journalist Florian Plettenberg. Juventus have selected him to strengthen their attack because of his physical strength and personality on the pitch.

Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad have confirmed the departure of French winger Moussa Diaby, who is moving to Bayer Leverkusen. Al-Ittihad published a video of his best moments at the club under the headline “He left a legacy and moved on”, while thanking him for his time in Saudi Arabia.

Barcelona have agreed a three-season contract with Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus after reaching an agreement with Arsenal. The Catalan club said Jesus was born in Sao Paulo on 3 April 1997 and began his career at Anhanguera before joining the youth system at Palmeiras.

He made his Palmeiras debut in March 2015, helping the club win the Brazilian Cup that year and the Brazilian league title in 2016. He was also named the best player in the Brazilian league in 2016.

Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira, 26, has completed a move to Hamburg. Vieira joined Arsenal in 2022 and made 49 appearances for the club before returning to Hamburg, where he spent last season on loan, in a transfer worth about 10m euros.

Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund says the German champions will not make any more signings before the window closes, although players could still leave for clubs in countries where the market remains open.

“Nothing else will happen regarding new signings,” Freund told German media. “As for departures, the transfer market will remain open after today in some countries, so something could happen.”

Freund also said Sacha Boey was training separately while a possible departure was considered. Bayern, however, had ultimately decided to keep Japan international Hiroki Ito.

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Italian defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta, with the player due to join in 2027. The 18-year-old made 35 appearances for Atalanta last season, his first campaign in Bergamo after moving from Genoa in July 2025.

His performances led to a first senior call-up for Italy and he made his first two international appearances in June.

Aston Villa have signed 18-year-old Senegalese forward Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for 55m euros. The deal was completed after Mbaye travelled to England for a medical and to sign his contract.

Mbaye joined Paris Saint-Germain’s academy at the age of 10 and made his professional debut in August 2024, aged 16 years, six months and 23 days. That made him the youngest player to start a match for the Paris club.

Atletico Madrid are working on a deal for Argentina left-back Nicolas Tagliafico from Lyon, according to Spanish newspaper AS. Tagliafico has given the move his approval, but Atletico face competition from Juventus.

Tottenham forward Richarlison is not expected to return to Everton, four years after leaving the club. Sky Sports reports that the Brazilian is likely to remain at Tottenham despite being linked with a move away.

Everton have also had a 43m-euro bid for England attacking midfielder Jamie Leweling rejected by Stuttgart, according to Sky Germany. Roma were also unable to reach an agreement for the player, while Everton may still complete other deals, including a possible move for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun.

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is close to joining Tottenham on loan. Romano said all the details, including personal terms, had been agreed. The deal will include a loan fee and an option for Tottenham to buy Mudryk, although that clause will not be compulsory.

Paris Saint-Germain tried to sign an attacking player during the past 24 hours but were unsuccessful. RMC reports that the club’s business involving new arrivals is now complete, although the future of Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches remains under consideration.

PSG have nevertheless enjoyed a record transfer window in terms of departures, with their sales generating about 370m euros.

Borussia Dortmund have reached a verbal agreement to sign Arsenal forward Ethan Nwaneri on a season-long loan. Romano reported that the deal had been completed after Nwaneri approved the move.

Lazio are considering a move for Argentina striker Mauro Icardi, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. His agent, Letterio Pino, said: “Lazio? There is talk about it.”

Icardi, 33, has played for Turkish club Galatasaray since 2022, having previously spent time at Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester City winger Jack Grealish has agreed to join Everton on loan. Romano said Grealish would undergo a medical on Tuesday before completing the move, which follows his earlier spell with Aston Villa.

The Italian transfer journalist added that Everton had reached an agreement with City after Grealish gave his approval to the switch.

The transfer deadlines vary across Europe and beyond. Italy, France and Germany close their windows at 21:00 Mecca time on Tuesday. Spain’s deadline is 00:59 on Wednesday, with clubs in England able to complete deals until 01:00 the same day.

The second transfer window in Major League Soccer and the Netherlands closes on Wednesday. Turkey’s market remains open until Friday, while Mexico’s deadline is 11 September, Portugal’s is 15 September and Saudi Arabia’s window stays open until 12 October.
