Jordaan rejects questions over Mosimane’s salary as Bafana return is confirmed

Danny Jordaan has refused to discuss Pitso Mosimane’s salary after the coach was approved by the association’s NEC to return for a second spell in charge of Bafana Bafana.

Mosimane’s proposed package has been the subject of public debate in recent weeks after differences between his terms and those agreed with his predecessor, Hugo Broos, were revealed.

Jordaan reacted angrily when asked about the issue and insisted that the coach’s salary was a private matter.

“No we are not answering questions about the salary of the coach, you can ask the coach if he wants to disclose his salary but that is his business. Will you disclose your salary? That is not a question.”

Mosimane, 62, previously managed South Africa’s national team from 2010 to 2012. His return comes 14 years after his first spell in charge, with the 2027 AFCON qualifiers due to begin this month.

The coach said he would not arrive with the intention of dismantling the progress made under Broos. Instead, he plans to build on the squad that has established a strong foundation and was involved in the team that went to the World Cup.

“I’m not carrying a big broom to sweep up because we have a very good foundation in the team that went to the World Cup, mixed in are five major players who are injured. We don’t have much time, we just have to replace those players.”

Mosimane acknowledged that the limited time before the qualifiers would influence his approach. His immediate priority will be to work with the players already in the squad while finding suitable replacements for the five injured senior figures.

He also indicated that he would examine options beyond the established group and consider players based outside the country who have not recently featured for Bafana Bafana.

That approach could lead to the international returns of Thembinkosi Lorch and Percy Tau, both of whom may come back into contention under the new coach.

Mosimane’s appointment follows the association’s decision to approve his return through its NEC. The debate surrounding the salary package has continued since that announcement, particularly because of the reported differences between his proposed deal and Broos’ agreement.

However, the coach’s focus is now on preparing for the start of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. He has made clear that he intends to preserve the momentum built by Broos’ team rather than begin a wholesale rebuilding process.

South Africa will therefore enter the next phase with Mosimane returning to a national side he previously led, while the coach weighs continuity against the need to replace injured players and assess alternatives who have been absent from recent Bafana Bafana squads.
