Fabio Vieira joins Hamburg permanently from Arsenal for reported €10m

Hamburg have signed Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira on a permanent deal from Arsenal, completing the transfer after his loan spell with the German club last season.

The 26-year-old’s move was announced by both clubs on Tuesday. Hamburg did not disclose the transfer fee, although reports in Germany indicate that the club will pay about €10m for the player.

Vieira originally joined Arsenal in 2022 but made only 33 appearances for the Premier League club across his first two seasons. The midfielder spent the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Porto before moving to Hamburg on a temporary deal for the following season.

His loan spell in Hamburg has now been converted into a permanent transfer, although the final agreement was reached only after further negotiations between the two clubs.

Hamburg had an option to buy Vieira for €20m at the end of last season, but chose not to activate that clause. Instead, the club reopened discussions with Arsenal and secured the player on terms that are reported to be significantly lower than the original purchase option.

The transfer is expected to make Vieira Hamburg’s most expensive signing in recent years. The club’s previous record investment during that period came in 2016, when it paid €14m to sign Filip Kostic from Stuttgart.

Vieira joined Arsenal in 2022 but struggled to establish himself as a regular in the side during his two seasons in England. His appearances for the club totalled 33 before he began a sequence of loan moves designed to provide him with more playing time.

The first of those loan spells took him to Porto in the 2024-25 season. He then spent last season with Hamburg, where his performances persuaded the German club to pursue a permanent arrangement despite deciding against using the €20m option included in his original loan agreement.

Arsenal’s announcement confirmed that Vieira had now left the club permanently, while Hamburg’s own statement marked the completion of the deal for a player who had already spent the previous season with them.

The reported €10m fee places the transfer below the €20m option that Hamburg had been entitled to activate, but above the sum involved in many of the club’s recent signings. It also leaves Kostic’s €14m move from Stuttgart in 2016 as the benchmark for Hamburg’s biggest recent acquisition, although Vieira’s transfer is now the club’s most expensive in that period after the reported figures are taken into account.
