Malick Yalcouye’s Chelsea goal gives Herve Renard a selection dilemma for Cote d’Ivoire

Malick Yalcouye scored on his first start of the season for Brighton to strengthen his case for a place in Herve Renard’s first Cote d’Ivoire squad, although the 20-year-old still faces considerable competition for a senior international call-up.

Yalcouye began Sunday’s Premier League match against Chelsea after appearing as a substitute in Brighton’s 4-0 victory over Aston Villa on 23 August. Brighton ultimately lost 4-3 at Stamford Bridge, but the midfielder provided one of the game’s key moments for the visitors.

Playing in an advanced midfield role, the 1.69m player reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the Chelsea penalty area in the 35th minute. His finish reduced the deficit to 3-1 and gave Brighton renewed hope before he was substituted in the 74th minute.

The performance has attracted attention in Cote d’Ivoire, where Yalcouye continues to be regarded as one of the country’s most promising young players.

He has already established himself as an important member of the Cote d’Ivoire Under-23 side, winning six caps, but he has yet to be selected for the senior team, known as the Elephants. His latest display raises the question of whether he could earn a place in Renard’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and a friendly against Cameroon.

Renard is expected to announce a widely anticipated squad in the coming weeks as he begins his second spell in charge of Cote d’Ivoire. At present, Yalcouye may still be considered too inexperienced to be the surprise inclusion in the French manager’s first selection, unless he can maintain the form shown against Chelsea.

The former Swansea player is competing for a midfield place with several established internationals. Franck Kessie, Christ Inao Oulai, Ibrahim Sangare and Seko Fofana all have the advantage of experience, including involvement at the World Cup.

That depth could make it difficult for Yalcouye to break into the squad immediately. However, Renard has previously shown that he is prepared to trust young players when circumstances warrant it.

During his first period in charge of Cote d’Ivoire, between 2014 and 2015, Renard handed opportunities to Kessie and Sangare. Their subsequent development means there is a precedent for the coach to take a chance on emerging talent, and Yalcouye could benefit if he continues to make an impact for Brighton.

For now, the midfielder’s goal at Chelsea does not guarantee a place in the senior squad. It does, however, ensure that his name will be part of the discussion before Renard reveals the first Cote d’Ivoire selection of his return.
