Bruno Fernandes hat-trick inspires Manchester United to first league win against Ipswich Town
Manchester United claimed their first Premier League victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, inspired by a hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes scored three times as United responded to their opening defeat by Hull City and collected their first three points of the campaign.
Ipswich remain on three points after following up their victory over Sunderland on the opening weekend with defeat at Old Trafford.
As well as Fernandes’ treble, Bryan Mbeumo scored for Manchester United, while the visitors’ other goal came from Chuba Akpom. Harry Maguire was also involved in United’s second goal, which was ultimately awarded against Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves.
Fernandes leads United response
Ipswich made the quicker start and went ahead in the 28th minute. Leif Davis followed up a cross from the right and finished to put the home side in front.
United levelled 12 minutes later through Fernandes. The Portugal midfielder broke clear of the defence before driving a powerful left-footed shot into the net.
The sides went into half-time level at 1-1, but Manchester United took control after the interval.
Maguire appeared to put United ahead in the 56th minute with a close-range effort from inside the penalty area. Play was paused while the goal was reviewed because the ball had struck Maguire’s hand before he attempted the shot.
The referee nevertheless awarded the goal as an own goal against Ipswich defender Greaves. The decision was based on the view that Maguire’s effort had been heading wide before it changed direction after hitting Greaves’ foot.
United were awarded a penalty in the 60th minute after Matheus Cunha was brought down. Fernandes took responsibility from the spot and converted in the 61st minute to make it 3-1 and claim his second goal of the afternoon.
Seven minutes later, Fernandes completed his hat-trick. He followed up after a shot from Mbeumo had rebounded off the Ipswich defence, turning the loose ball into the net for United’s fourth goal.
Mbeumo then added United’s fifth in the 82nd minute, with Fernandes providing the assist. Mbeumo raced through one-on-one and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper from outside the penalty area.
Late Ipswich consolation
Ipswich reduced the deficit in stoppage time after a mistake by Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez while attempting to clear the ball.
Enciso won possession and supplied Akpom, who finished into an unguarded net to score Ipswich’s second goal.
It proved only a consolation, with Manchester United completing a 5-2 victory and securing their first league win of the season.
