Manchester City debut offers promising glimpse of Ayyoub Bouaddi’s talent

Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi made an impressive Premier League debut for Manchester City on Friday, just two days after completing his move to the club, as the Citizens beat Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park.

The 18-year-old came on as a late substitute with City already in control of the match and quickly showed the composure and technical ability that persuaded the English club to invest in him.

Bouaddi completed all 21 of his passes, recording a 100% passing success rate during his first appearance in a Manchester City shirt. He also contributed defensively and helped his side retain control during the closing stages.

His introduction came in a demanding environment. Having only been officially announced as a City player on Wednesday, Bouaddi was still getting to know his new team-mates and adapting to the tactical requirements of his new club.

The Moroccan’s first contribution suggested he was comfortable with the demands placed on him.

Rather than attempting to force the game, Bouaddi kept his play simple and concentrated on possession, positioning and making himself available to receive the ball.

He regularly found space between the lines and showed confidence when passing under pressure.

One of his most notable moments came when he played a sharp pass towards Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo, creating an opening that could have resulted in another goal for City.

Bouaddi was also involved in defensive work during his brief appearance, helping recover possession and maintain City’s control as the match moved towards its conclusion.

His performance was reflected in the individual ratings published after the game. Bouaddi received a score of 7.18, placing him fifth among the highest-rated players in the match.

Only Rayane Cherki, who received 8.55, Erling Haaland on 8.09, and Phil Foden and Semenyo, both on 7.36, finished above him.

Unlike Bouaddi, all four players ranked ahead of him started the match and therefore had considerably more time to influence the contest.

The rating cannot be directly compared with those of players who completed most or all of the match, but it nevertheless provides an early indication of the impact made by the teenager after coming off the bench.

Bouaddi’s display also highlighted several of the qualities that have shaped his development.

His positioning, movement, passing, ability to retain possession under pressure and understanding of space were all evident during his short spell on the pitch.

Earlier, coach Enzo Maresca had urged patience with the new arrival while also recognising his qualities and ability to settle into the squad.

The move to Manchester City represents a major step for Bouaddi, who has left a French football environment in which he had already gained considerable experience despite his age.

He now faces increased competition and tactical demands at a club where every appearance provides an opportunity to prove his value.

The British press has already placed significant expectations on the young Moroccan, with some observers suggesting he could eventually become a leader in Manchester City’s midfield.

Those comparisons represent recognition of his potential but also create additional pressure on a player at the beginning of his career with the club.

For now, Bouaddi’s first Premier League appearance provides an encouraging starting point.

His perfect passing record, defensive contribution and ability to settle quickly into City’s possession-based approach offered positive signs, although his limited minutes mean it remains too early to draw firm conclusions.

At Selhurst Park, however, the Moroccan international took his first steps into the Premier League with confidence and composure.
