Kaizer Chiefs midfield crisis puts Fernando Da Cruz’s squad faith to the test
Fernando Da Cruz’s decision not to pursue further signings is facing its biggest challenge yet, with Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield options reduced by a growing injury list during the 2026/27 campaign.
The Chiefs head coach dismissed the need for additions earlier in the current PSL transfer window, expressing complete satisfaction with the squad assembled before the start of the season. However, the Glamour Boys now have four major injury concerns affecting their squad balance.
Captain Brandon Petersen is making progress in his recovery from a knee injury and has returned to individual training. His rehabilitation represents encouraging news for Da Cruz, although Petersen is still working towards a return to full first-team activity.
Lebohang Maboe is also dealing with an ankle injury. The midfielder has featured in all eight of Chiefs’ matches this season, making his fitness an important concern as the club attempts to maintain momentum.
Phili and Siphesihle Ndlovu remain long-term absentees, further limiting the options available to Da Cruz in a key area of the team.
The Frenchman spoke to the media at the Kaizer Chiefs Village last month and was clear that he did not want the club to recruit any new players during the transfer window.
“For the moment I’m happy with the squad,” Da Cruz said.
“From my side, there is no interest in new players, but maybe if there is a good opportunity, the club will take a position on this good opportunity.
“But from my side, I repeat, I don’t request any new players. I’m very happy with our squad.”
Da Cruz had overseen a substantial overhaul of the Chiefs squad before the season began and appeared prepared to rely on the group he had put together. His comments indicated that he believed the existing players provided sufficient depth to compete without further reinforcement.
The injury situation has now placed that confidence under pressure. With Maboe unavailable through injury, Petersen still progressing towards a full return, and Phili and Siphesihle Ndlovu absent for longer periods, Da Cruz must manage a depleted midfield with the resources already at the club.
The coach’s earlier refusal to request new signings means the current period will provide a clear test of whether the squad can absorb the losses and keep Chiefs’ campaign on course.
