Five-goal Bayern Munich sweep aside Stuttgart in Bundesliga opener

Bayern Munich began their 2026-27 Bundesliga campaign with a convincing 5-1 victory over Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena on Friday evening.

The defending champions were made to work for their breakthrough after Stuttgart started the match with considerable attacking intent during the opening 15 minutes. Bayern eventually took the lead in the 21st minute from a set-piece, with Joshua Kimmich delivering an inswinging corner towards the near post.

Dayot Upamecano escaped his marker and met the ball with a firm header, sending it into the net to put the hosts ahead.

Stuttgart responded positively after the interval and equalised seven minutes into the second half. A loose ball fell to Josha Vagnoman on the edge of the penalty area, allowing him to strike first time into the top-right corner beyond the reach of the Bayern goalkeeper.

Their parity lasted only three minutes.

Kimmich soon put Bayern back in front with another important contribution. The Germany international threaded a pass into the penalty area for Michael Olise, who finished with a low shot into the bottom-left corner to make it 2-1.

Bayern extended their advantage just two minutes later, although the goal came through a moment of misfortune for Stuttgart. Vagnoman inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a cross from Alphonso Davies.

The third goal shifted the momentum decisively in Bayern’s favour, with Stuttgart’s tempo dropping as the home side took control of the contest.

Bayern then added a fourth following a fine individual move from Morocco international Ismael Saibari. After advancing and beating his opponent, Saibari supplied the ball to Alexander Pavlovic in front of goal, and the Germany international calmly finished from close range.

Saibari had entered the match as a substitute for Nathaniel Brown in the 61st minute.

The Moroccan was involved again in stoppage time, producing another incisive pass to put Luis Diaz through on goal. Diaz completed the scoring in the second minute of added time by finishing after going clear of the Stuttgart defence.

The result gives Bayern an emphatic start to their Bundesliga title defence, while Stuttgart leave the Allianz Arena having conceded five goals despite matching the champions for periods of the game.

Bayern’s victory was built on their ability to respond immediately whenever Stuttgart threatened. The visitors’ equaliser briefly raised the prospect of a more competitive second half, but Olise restored Bayern’s lead before the own goal opened the game up.

Kimmich’s set-piece delivery and assist were central to the result, while Saibari made a notable impact after coming off the bench, contributing to both of Bayern’s late goals.
