Orlando Pirates face Moremi fitness race before MTN8 semi-final against Sekhukhune United
Orlando Pirates are waiting on the fitness of key attacker Moremi before Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final second leg against Sekhukhune United, with the winger already ruled out of their latest Betway Premiership match.
The 25-year-old speedster missed Tuesday’s league encounter after failing a late fitness assessment. Orlando Pirates later confirmed in an official statement that Moremi remains in rehabilitation for an injury suffered during the club’s recent 1-1 draw with AmaZulu.
His availability is now a major concern for head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as Pirates prepare for a decisive meeting with Sekhukhune United. The Buccaneers hold a slender one-goal aggregate advantage and need to protect that lead to reach the MTN8 final.
Moremi’s return would be particularly valuable because of his importance to the tactical balance of the side. His pace and ability to operate in wide areas have made him a significant part of Ouaddou’s plans, while his form this season has further increased the pressure for him to recover in time.
The winger has averaged a goal every third match this campaign and has scored twice in his two domestic appearances. His current influence also reflects the role he played in Pirates’ successful cup run last season, when he was regarded as an undisputed key figure and claimed the MTN8 Last Man Standing award.
Ouaddou is expected to monitor Moremi’s progress closely before making a final decision at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, 29 August 2026, where the second leg is scheduled to be played.
If Moremi does not pass his final medical assessment, Pirates have several alternatives available. Ouaddou has a 41-man squad from which he can reorganise the wide attacking positions, although replacing Moremi’s speed and directness could still prove a challenge.
Bafana Bafana winger Oswin Appollis is one option for the Moroccan coach. The experienced Daniel Msendami could also be asked to provide energy and movement from the flanks.
Another possibility is new signing Gamphani Lungu, who could be brought into the team to carry out the attacking responsibilities in Moremi’s absence.
The technical staff will assess all three options while waiting for clarity on Moremi’s condition. Their priority will be to maintain the advantage gained in the first leg and ensure Pirates progress to the final.
For now, the club remains hopeful that the attacker can make sufficient progress during his rehabilitation to be considered for selection. However, his final medical evaluation will determine whether he can play a part in the high-stakes contest against Sekhukhune United.
