Chelsea close in on Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor as defensive rebuild continues

Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with Atalanta to sign 18-year-old Italian defender Honest Ahanor in a deal worth about £40m, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The agreement is understood to be a package deal, with the final details still being settled before the transfer can be formally completed. Paperwork is being prepared and Chelsea are also working to secure authorisation for Ahanor to travel.

Chelsea’s move for Ahanor comes as the club continues to strengthen its defence and build a squad capable of competing over the coming years.

The timing of the proposed transfer is notable because Chelsea’s opening Premier League match under head coach Xabi Alonso highlighted some of the defensive problems that affected the team previously.

Chelsea began the season with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage, but the result did not completely mask concerns over their performance at the back.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was a particular source of concern after making several costly mistakes during the match. Fulham’s equaliser came when Sanchez failed to deal convincingly with Josh King’s shot from a tight angle, allowing the effort to beat him at the near post.

The Spain international was also involved in Fulham’s second goal. Sanchez saved Timothy Castagne’s effort but pushed the ball into a dangerous area, where Gonzalo Garcia followed up with a header into the net.

Chelsea’s defenders also carried some responsibility for the goal. Levi Colwill made an error in dealing with a long ball, while the match exposed spaces in the back line and weaknesses in the home side’s response to Fulham’s attacks, particularly during periods of sustained pressure.

According to analysis by Squawka, Sanchez appeared nervous from the start and made a number of mistakes with his passing and his handling of crosses, placing additional pressure on the Chelsea defence.

Ahanor is therefore being considered not only as a potential answer to current defensive issues but also as part of Chelsea’s longer-term strategy of investing in young players.

The teenager had already been on Chelsea’s list of targets, with the club holding discussions with Atalanta and the player’s representatives. Atalanta had previously rejected two Chelsea offers for Ahanor this summer, while Brighton had also shown an interest in the defender.

Chelsea believe Ahanor has the potential to become an important member of their defence in the years ahead. His possible arrival would fit the club’s wider recruitment policy of signing young prospects and developing them into established first-team players.

The remaining details of the agreement must now be resolved before the transfer can be officially completed, with Chelsea expected to decide on the best pathway for Ahanor once that process is finished.
