Fenerbahce reach Champions League group stage after Lyon clash erupts

Fenerbahce secured their place in the Champions League group stage by eliminating Olympique Lyon, but their victory was overshadowed by ugly scenes involving Matteo Guendouzi and members of the French club’s staff.

Lyon’s exit was confirmed after goals from Moryke and Archie Brown put the Turkish side in control. Malik Fofana scored for the hosts, but Lyon were unable to find the equaliser they needed on a heated Wednesday night in France.

The trouble continued after the final whistle. Guendouzi, the former Olympique de Marseille midfielder, became involved in a verbal confrontation with Antonio Ferreira, Lyon’s goalkeeping coach, as he made his way towards the area where Fenerbahce supporters had gathered.

Video footage shared on social media appeared to show Guendouzi being confronted and then struck by members of the Lyon staff. He was surrounded near the entrance to the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms, with the incident escalating into a wider altercation between the two teams.

The tension had already been building during the match, when Guendouzi clashed with sections of the home support. He said Lyon fans had insulted his family and that he responded by making obscene gestures towards them.

Corentin Tolisso, Guendouzi’s France team-mate and a Lyon player, criticised his conduct after the match.

“I simply told him to celebrate with his team and remain humble after the victory. Leave Lyon’s supporters alone, they are disappointed enough. I find this behaviour irresponsible. I hope he learns from it,” Tolisso said.

Guendouzi defended his actions by saying the abuse had continued throughout the game and before kick-off.

“As you know, when 60,000 people insult your family, your mother, your children, even before the game, and none of the refereeing team asks the supporters to be quiet… because I know that in France, when this kind of thing happens, they reach a point where they speak to the supporters and the game can be stopped,” he said.

“For 90 minutes, and even longer during the warm-up, they insulted my family. It affects you deeply.”

Guendouzi added: “If you want to joke, it has to go both ways. They insulted my mother and my family, which I consider disrespectful. In addition, if we are no longer able to celebrate in the way we want, then I think that is unfortunate.”

He also acknowledged his long-standing support for Olympique de Marseille, Lyon’s rivals.

“Everyone knows that I support Olympique de Marseille, and I have never hidden it. It is just banter, they insulted my family,” he said.

The post-match confrontation quickly spread online, with footage showing the moment a member of Lyon’s staff appeared to confront Guendouzi. The scenes are expected to attract close attention from the relevant disciplinary authorities, with the possibility of severe sanctions raised after the violence between the two teams.
