Abu Al-Shamat’s first-touch finish sends Al-Ahli Saudi into Intercontinental Cup second round

Al-Ahli Saudi reached the second round of the 2026 Intercontinental Cup after Saleh Abu Al-Shamat’s first-touch finish secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Auckland City at Alinma Stadium.

The Saudi side struggled to create clear opportunities for much of the first half, but improved after the interval and eventually found the decisive goal in the 63rd minute.

Eduard Spertsyan began the move with a powerful run down the right flank. After advancing towards the edge of the penalty area, he delivered an inviting pass into the path of Abu Al-Shamat, who guided the ball into the net with his first touch of the match.

That strike proved enough to settle a closely fought contest and send Al-Ahli Saudi through to the next stage of the global competition.

Al-Ahli Saudi will now face South African club Mamelodi Sundowns on 19 September in the second round, with the tie being played for the Cup of the Three Continents representing Asia, Africa and Oceania.

Auckland City had defended resolutely during the opening half, restricting Al-Ahli Saudi to only a small number of attempts. The first period produced few genuine chances and was played at a lower level than the second half, when both teams showed greater attacking intent.

Al-Ahli Saudi raised their performance after the restart and were rewarded with the opening goal. They then created several further opportunities but were unable to add to their advantage.

Auckland City continued to compete despite falling behind, while Al-Ahli Saudi concentrated on preserving their lead. The home side ultimately held on to claim a place in the second round.

The match-winning moment was also shared in a video showing Abu Al-Shamat scoring “from his first touch” to put Al-Ahli Saudi 1-0 ahead against Auckland City.
