Orlando Pirates ready to give Sebastian Pedersen time to make his mark

Orlando Pirates head coach Ouaddou says the club will support Sebastian Pedersen as the Norwegian forward adjusts to the demands of South African football and works towards full fitness.

Pedersen arrived at the Buccaneers with a strong goalscoring reputation from Norway and is expected to make an immediate contribution in South Africa. However, after the striker made his first appearance in the Premier Soccer League during Pirates’ MTN8 semi-final victory over Babina Noko, Ouaddou stressed that the new signing would need time to settle into his new surroundings.

The Norwegian showed glimpses of his attacking threat at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, having a few opportunities to test the opposition goal. His willingness to make an instant impact pleased Ouaddou, but the coach said adapting to the PSL would require more than simply relying on Pedersen’s European experience.

“Every league has its own specifics, and we don’t have to think just because a player comes from a European league that it would be easy here. The PSL is a high level, there’s speed and organisation.

“I’m sure he’ll adapt quickly, and we will help him in this new environment.”

Ouaddou believes Pedersen’s understanding of Orlando Pirates’ tactical approach is an area where the forward still needs to catch up. The coach also indicated that improving the striker’s physical condition remains a priority before he can fully demonstrate his ability.

“I’m sure that he will help the team. Even when you have such quality you need to be well prepared and up for the challenge physically. We are still working with him to get his fitness up for my game model. He needs to increase his physical work in order for him to shine and show his quality.”

Pedersen’s first taste of competitive action has therefore been viewed as an important introduction rather than a complete assessment of what he can offer. Pirates are continuing to work with him as he becomes familiar with the pace, organisation and physical demands of the PSL, while also adapting to Ouaddou’s game model.

The timing of that process will be tested by a busy period for the Buccaneers. Orlando Pirates host Sekhukhune in the Betway Premiership tonight before the teams meet again on Saturday in the return leg of the MTN8.

Ouaddou is encouraged by the fact that both fixtures will be played at the Orlando Amstel Arena. The consecutive home matches give Pirates the opportunity to manage Pedersen’s integration in familiar surroundings while continuing their campaign in both competitions.

The coach’s comments underline the club’s intention to back the Norwegian rather than place undue pressure on him after only one early appearance. Pedersen will be expected to build on the promising signs he displayed at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium as he continues to improve his fitness and adjust to life with Orlando Pirates.
