Ronnel Donnelly scored three times as South Africa began their 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign with a 4-0 win over Madagascar at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Friday.
Desiree Ellis’ side dominated the second-round first leg and will take a substantial advantage into Tuesday’s return match.
South Africa received a bye into the second round, while Madagascar reached this stage after beating South Sudan 2-1 on aggregate. Their first-round second leg was played behind closed doors at Madagascar’s request.
The hosts immediately looked to attack down the wings, with Mamelodi Sundowns forward Donnelly starting alongside her club team-mate Isabella Ludwig.
South Africa took the lead in the 26th minute through an unusual finish. Karabo Dhlamini’s corner travelled towards the far post, where Donnelly made contact. The ball went over Madagascar goalkeeper Veresantatra Diana and continued into the net.
Donnelly struck again 11 minutes later, once more following service from Dhlamini. She brought the ball under control before driving a low effort into the bottom corner, giving Banyana Banyana a 2-0 lead at half-time.
Ellis brought Linda Motlhalo on at the interval as South Africa continued to press for further goals. Donnelly went close to completing her hat-trick soon after the restart before adding a third in the 61st minute.
Fikile Magama created the chance with a low delivery from the right. Donnelly met it first time and directed her finish into the bottom corner to put South Africa firmly in control.
There was further disappointment for Madagascar in the 78th minute. Hildah Magaia appeared to have scored after going beyond Diana and shooting towards the goal, but Emilienne Solange’s attempted clearance ended in an own goal instead.
The result leaves Madagascar needing a significant improvement in Tuesday’s second leg if they are to overturn South Africa’s advantage and continue their Olympic qualification campaign.
Madagascar managed only one shot during the match and had 27 per cent possession, while South Africa’s four-goal victory strengthened their position ahead of the decisive return fixture.
