Thierry Henry watches as Orlando Pirates tighten grip on Soweto derby with seventh straight win
Orlando Pirates continued their impressive run under Abdeslam Ouaddou with a victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the 186th Soweto derby, extending their league winning streak to seven matches as French and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry watched from the stands.
Thierry Henry witnessed Orlando Pirates extend their dominance over Kaizer Chiefs as the Buccaneers secured another Soweto derby victory to strengthen their position in the Premier Soccer League title race.
The French and Arsenal legend was among the special guests at the 186th edition of the historic rivalry, which delivered an entertaining contest at the stadium, with Pirates continuing their remarkable run under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
The victory marked Pirates’ seventh consecutive league win, underlining their growing authority in the competition and sending a strong message to title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
It also extended their unbeaten league run against Chiefs to seven meetings, having recorded five victories and two draws during that period.
Although Pirates were not at their best in the opening exchanges, they improved considerably after the break to take control of the contest and secure another important result.
Pirates respond to Ouaddou’s demands
Ouaddou had challenged his players to demonstrate commitment and turn their opportunities into positive results in his pre-match programme notes.
His message appeared to resonate with the squad as the Buccaneers eventually found a way past their rivals, despite facing some difficult moments during the first half.
Pirates’ starting XI reflected a combination of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, with Sipho Chaine, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Deon Hotto, Thalente Mbatha, Tshepang Moremi and Yanela Mbuthuma providing experience.
The coach also demonstrated confidence in younger players, handing opportunities to Lebone Seema, Nkosikhona Ndaba, Sipmphiwe Selepe, Simphiwe Masilela and Thapelo Mokobodi.
However, Pirates initially struggled to establish the balance Ouaddou wanted, particularly with Hotto operating at right-back because of the unavailability of Kamogelo Sebelebele and Bulelani Sigomoshe.
The veteran defender was less influential going forward, prompting a second-half adjustment that saw Gamphani Lungu replace Ndaba, allowing Hotto to return to his familiar left-back position.
The change helped Pirates improve their attacking play as they began to exert greater control over the encounter.
Chiefs start brightly but Pirates take control
Chiefs entered the derby determined to end their frustrating run against their Soweto rivals, with Fernando da Cruz selecting an experienced line-up.
Brandon Petersen, Thabo Moloisane, Ignacio Miguel, Reeve Frosler, Paseka Mako, Lebohang Maboe and Sibongiseni Mthethwa featured alongside attacking talents Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi and Wandile Duba.
Duba arrived with confidence after scoring a hat-trick against TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup during the week, but Vilakazi was particularly impressive in the early exchanges, giving Frosler problems on the flank.
Chiefs started aggressively and created several opportunities, with Chaine forced into action inside the opening five minutes to deny Duba after Shabalala played him through with a defence-splitting pass.
Pule Mmodi also struggled to convert his opportunities as Chiefs failed to capitalise on their promising start.
The opening half also produced a controversial moment when Pirates striker Mbuthuma went down inside the penalty area under pressure from a Chiefs defender after 23 minutes, but referee Luxolo Badi allowed play to continue.
Mbuthuma recovered quickly and soon made his presence felt at the other end.
The striker fired towards goal, with his effort taking a deflection off Moloisane before finding the back of the net to give Pirates the lead.
Chiefs responded positively and restored parity through Mmodi, who capitalised on a costly goalkeeping error by Chaine, who failed to hold the ball and allowed the forward to score from close range.
Moremi leads Pirates’ second-half response
Pirates returned from the break with greater purpose and eventually regained the advantage through a well-executed attacking move.
After winning possession in midfield, the Buccaneers launched a swift counterattack, with Mokobodi showing composure to pick out Moremi, who continued his impressive scoring form across competitions.
Pirates subsequently created further opportunities to increase their advantage but lacked the clinical finishing required to turn their second-half dominance into a more convincing scoreline.
For Ouaddou, however, the result represented another significant step in his side’s pursuit of the league title.
Their demanding schedule, which includes the CAF Champions League, Carling Knockout Cup, Nedbank Cup and the defence of their league crown, will test the depth of the squad in the coming months.
Chiefs face growing pressure under Da Cruz
While Pirates continue to gather momentum, Chiefs have struggled to find consistency under Da Cruz.
Their inability to overcome their biggest rivals adds to the pressure on the coach, particularly with AmaZulu and Milford FC positioned above them in the league standings.
Chiefs are targeting at least a third-place finish to secure a return to the CAF Confederation Cup, but their recent performances have made that objective increasingly challenging.
Henry, meanwhile, was treated to an entertaining spectacle, with end-to-end football and a pitch invasion by an overzealous supporter in the closing stages adding to the drama.
