Mateta’s Crystal Palace future uncertain as Premier League clubs weigh move

Jean-Philippe Mateta could be set for a late transfer-window exit from Crystal Palace after his representatives approached Manchester United and Tottenham about a potential move, according to TEAMtalk.

The 29-year-old France international, who is of Congolese origin from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has wanted to leave the Eagles for several months. His departure came close to happening in January, when discussions with AC Milan and Juventus progressed, but both moves collapsed, partly because of issues identified during his medical examinations.

Mateta’s contractual position has since become more complicated. The striker is challenging the validity of the final year of his Crystal Palace contract, although that process has not succeeded so far. His agreement with the club therefore remains valid.

Crystal Palace do not want to sell Mateta and he is currently contracted until June 2027. However, his representatives are continuing to look for a solution before the transfer window closes.

Manchester United are considering several attacking options and could give Mateta’s situation closer attention if Marcus Rashford or Joshua Zirkzee leaves Old Trafford. Either departure would create space in the Red Devils’ squad and could increase the likelihood of the club examining a move for the Palace forward.

Tottenham have also been contacted by Mateta’s representatives. Spurs remain keen to add to their attacking options despite already having several deals at an advanced stage.

Aston Villa and Atletico de Madrid are also understood to be monitoring the player’s position. Clubs from the Saudi Pro League provide another possible destination for the striker, who was born in Sevran.

Mateta’s estimated market value is €30m, according to Transfermarkt. His reported salary in England is €2,999,892 (£2,590,000), equivalent to 1,949,929,800 CFA francs.

The forward’s immediate focus remains uncertain as Crystal Palace prepare to play Manchester City in the second round of the English league season. Before that fixture, betting company 1xBet lists Crystal Palace at 4.90 to win, with a draw priced at 4.00 and Manchester City at 1.56.

For now, Palace’s preference is to retain Mateta, but the continued efforts of his representatives mean his future could remain one of the late talking points of the transfer window.
