Morgan Rogers: Chelsea forward says Xabi Alonso’s freedom-focused style convinced him to return

Morgan Rogers says Xabi Alonso’s football philosophy and willingness to give him freedom on the pitch were key factors in his decision to join Chelsea, with the club’s record acquisition set to play a central role in the manager’s plans.

The England international has begun a new chapter at Stamford Bridge after returning to a club he knew during his childhood. Rogers has spoken about his move, his first impressions of Chelsea’s training facilities and the conversations he had with Alonso before agreeing to work under the new head coach.

The attacking midfielder believes Alonso’s approach is closely aligned with his own view of the game. In particular, he was attracted by the prospect of being encouraged to express himself and make an impact without being overly restricted on the pitch.

“I’ve had a few conversations with Xabi Alonso, and it was important for me to understand how he works and what he expects. His style fits perfectly with how I see the game and how I want to play. I want to express myself freely on the pitch, and knowing that he supports that was a big reason for me to come here,” Rogers told JioStar.

Rogers’ return to Chelsea has a strong personal significance. He spent time at the club as a youngster and is already familiar with Cobham, the training base that will now form part of his daily life as a first-team player.

“I played here at Chelsea’s Cobham Training Ground as a kid, and every time I come back, it feels great to be here. It’s a fantastic place to train. It has everything a player needs to improve and get the most out of their game. So yeah, it’s really nice,” he added.

The 22-year-old also said Chelsea’s size, reputation and ambitions played an important part in his thinking as he considered his next move. He does not see the transfer merely as another stage in his individual career, but as a chance to help the club develop its wider project.

“I don’t think I need to say much about Chelsea. Everyone knows the club’s size and stature. I’m excited about the direction the club is heading in, and I want to be part of that journey. I feel I can fit in well here, and I hope it will be a positive experience for both the club moving forward and me,” he stated.

The move combines a return to familiar surroundings with a fresh challenge under Alonso, who will be looking to guide Chelsea as they attempt to recover in the English Premier League.

Rogers said he was determined to turn his enthusiasm for the transfer into performances after joining the club.

“I’m really excited and happy to be here. I’m grateful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started on the pitch,” Rogers said.

With his connection to Chelsea dating back to childhood, and Alonso’s philosophy offering the freedom he wants, Rogers will now aim to establish himself as an important part of the club’s new-look attacking setup.
