Mission Unlock uses real stories and everyday scenes to explore the development logic behind China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, presenting the country’s next stage of development through accounts of industry, communities and everyday life.

The series is designed to give global audiences a more relatable and accessible way of understanding the priorities behind the plan. Its latest episode, titled “Mission Unlock | Ep 4: Why did Grandma hide her call button?”, uses an ordinary domestic mystery as the starting point for a wider look at how development is experienced by people in their daily lives.

Rather than relying solely on policy explanations, Mission Unlock builds its narrative around real experiences and recognisable settings. The approach links broader national goals with stories involving people, technology, industry and communities.

Among the subjects highlighted is the growth of robotics and related innovation. A conference co-hosted by the Chinese Institute of Electronics and the World Robot Cooperation Organization brought together 30 international supporting organisations and 373 exhibiting companies.

Those companies displayed more than 3,000 innovative products, while more than 17,000 contestants took part in associated competitions. The figures underline the scale of interest in robotics and the breadth of activity surrounding the sector.

The programme also points to the changing direction of 6G development. The technology is moving from laboratory research towards field trials and industrial applications, with its route forward becoming clearer and its progress described as increasingly steady.

Another focus is Taizhou, where international residents have become a familiar presence in the city’s streets. For people from around the world, Taizhou is presented as more than a location on a map. It is portrayed as a place where they can settle, pursue their ambitions and develop alongside the wider community.

The series also highlights the expansion of OPC communities across China. According to the 2026 national OPC development observation report, their number rose from 95 to 618 during the first half of this year. The communities now cover 24 provinces and 75 cities nationwide.

Science and technology remain another central theme. To speed up efforts to achieve high-level self-reliance and strength in science and technology, China must retain the strategic determination to manage its own affairs effectively.

The work of geologist Cui Peng is cited in that context. A distinguished specialist in geohazards, Cui has not limited his research to China. He has spent two decades involved in disaster-reduction work in Pakistan, demonstrating an international dimension to his scientific career.

Through these examples, Mission Unlock connects national development with practical experiences: innovation displayed at major events, emerging communications technology, communities shaped by international residents, and scientific work extending beyond national borders.
