Orlando Pirates boss Abdeslam Ouaddou praises Deano Van Rooyen after departure

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has described Deano Van Rooyen as a “fantastic player” after the defender left the club by mutual consent.

Pirates confirmed Van Rooyen’s departure following discussions about the next stage of the 29-year-old’s career. Ouaddou said the full-back had made a significant contribution during his time with the Buccaneers and wished him well in his next move.

“Deano was a fantastic player. Sportively and humanly. He gave a lot for the club,” Ouaddou said.

The coach was speaking to journalists after Pirates’ MTN8 encounter against Sekhukhune United on Saturday, when he was asked about Van Rooyen’s exit.

“He won a lot of trophies. He gave joy to the fans. He gave joy to the club.”

Van Rooyen joined Pirates from Stellenbosch FC before the 2024/25 season after establishing himself as one of the more consistent full-backs in the Betway Premiership.

He made more than 50 appearances for Pirates across all competitions and was part of a successful period for the club, during which they collected several trophies.

The defender arrived at Pirates during Jose Riveiro’s time in charge and faced competition for his position. However, he maintained a professional approach and continued to contribute when selected.

Pirates also praised Van Rooyen’s conduct in the statement announcing the split. The club said he had consistently behaved as a model professional, whether he was named in the starting line-up or introduced from the bench.

Ouaddou, who has only recently begun his tenure as Pirates head coach, accepted that departures are a normal part of football and that clubs and players will sometimes move in different directions.

“And I think it’s part of the life of a club. To have some movement,” he added.

“So, the club and him, I think, find a way for him to continue his career in another club.”

Although Van Rooyen’s departure came relatively early in Ouaddou’s time at the Soweto club, the French-Moroccan coach said he was proud to have worked with the defender.

“I was very proud to work with him. And I just want to wish him all the best for his next project,” Ouaddou said.

Van Rooyen’s exit brings an end to his spell with Pirates after two seasons in which he played a role in the club’s trophy-winning run. The club’s decision to part ways with him was reached by mutual consent, with both parties now looking ahead to the next phase of his career.
