Sibisi credits Hugo Broos for shaping his Bafana Bafana career

Bafana Bafana defender Thabiso Sibisi has paid tribute to Hugo Broos, saying the former South Africa coach will be “missed” after having a major influence on his international career.

Sibisi worked under Broos at successive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in Ivory Coast and Morocco, before most recently being part of South Africa’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Broos, 74, announced last week that he would not extend his contract as Bafana Bafana coach. His departure brings an end to a period in which he established South Africa as a more competitive side and helped several players strengthen their international careers.

“What a man, he is going to be missed. He is a straight talker and it was an honour to work with him because you always knew where you stood with him.”

Sibisi was playing for Golden Arrows when Broos handed him his first Bafana Bafana call-up. The defender made his international debut in a friendly against Uganda in June 2021, shortly after Broos had taken charge.

The Belgian was known for his direct approach, and his willingness to challenge players and others around the team sometimes caused controversy. Sibisi, however, believes Broos’ comments were intended to push South African footballers to improve rather than to cause offence.

“Some people might’ve been offended by some of his comments, but it was coming from a good heart and a positive mindset that said we should always strive for more. He showed hard work and discipline throughout and I hope he enjoys his retirement, I also sent him a message to show my gratitude for all of his faith in me.”

One of the coach’s most distinctive traits was his readiness to trust his own judgement, particularly when naming his squads. Some of Broos’ selections were questioned by supporters and observers, but he continued to back the players he believed could deliver for Bafana Bafana.

Sibisi was among those who benefited from that faith and remembers how Broos remained committed to his choices even when they were debated publicly. When explaining his decision not to renew his contract last week, Broos again stressed that he had always followed his own methods and that they had worked successfully for him.

The focus now turns to the appointment of his successor. The South African Football Association (SAFA) National Executive Committee (NEC) is due to meet this weekend to discuss the candidates and decide who will lead Bafana Bafana in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin next month.

Former Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane is regarded as the favourite to return to the position, although football politics could still affect the process. It is believed Mosimane will be announced as the new coach.

The key message heard by the technical committee from Mosimane and the other candidates is that Bafana Bafana already possess a squad with strong foundations. That assessment reflects the progress made during Broos’ tenure and the platform he leaves for the next coach.

For Sibisi, however, Broos’ legacy is also personal. The defender’s rise from Golden Arrows to successive AFCON tournaments and the 2026 World Cup was built during the Belgian’s time in charge, making the coach’s influence particularly significant as South Africa prepares for a new era.
