Arthur Jantjies targets Two Oceans title defence after life-changing victory

Arthur Jantjies says winning the 56km Two Oceans race has transformed his life, with the Northern Cape-born runner now targeting a successful defence of his title in 2027.

The 26-year-old produced one of the biggest surprises of this year’s event, completing the race in 3:09:25 and earning R380 000 in prize money.

Since crossing the finish line, Jantjies has found himself facing a series of new opportunities, including media interviews and sponsorship engagements. He hopes the attention generated by his victory will lead to even greater possibilities in the future.

“I get goosebumps every time I think about my Two Oceans victory because it has changed by life dramatically. The one day I was still a normal runner and then the next day things got busy and everything changed.”

Jantjies’ success came during only his second ultra-marathon, but he said he approached race day believing he was capable of delivering an outstanding performance.

The runner said he and his support team had prepared carefully before the event. Their work included developing a clear race strategy which they felt could produce an unexpected result and surprise many observers.

That plan ultimately delivered a breakthrough victory and brought Jantjies widespread attention beyond the athletics community. However, he is determined to show that his Two Oceans triumph was not an isolated achievement.

“I don’t want it to be a one time thing. I want to defend my title successfully and then I also want to conquer other ultra-marathon races.”

His immediate schedule includes the Absa Run Your City Mangaung 10km, for which he has confirmed his entry on 25 October. He is also preparing for a marathon later this year.

The upcoming races will give Jantjies an opportunity to remain competitive while building towards his Two Oceans title defence. His victory has changed the scale of the attention around him, but his next challenge will be to match that performance and establish himself as a consistent winner.

For now, the memory of his 3:09:25 finish remains the moment that altered his career. The prize money, interviews and sponsorship engagements followed, but Jantjies’ stated ambition is to turn the breakthrough into a sustained period of success across ultra-marathons.
