Julian Alvarez’s Atletico de Madrid situation creates unease behind the scenes

The attention surrounding Julian Alvarez’s return to the Metropolitano is beginning to cause serious irritation among his Atletico de Madrid team-mates, despite the club’s public backing for the Argentina forward.

Atletico hosted Villarreal on Sunday in an entertaining La Liga contest that ended 2-2. Villarreal forward Georges Mikautadze was named player of the match after scoring a penalty and producing an impressive performance, but the spotlight after the final whistle was directed elsewhere.

Alvarez endured a difficult evening in a highly charged atmosphere. As expected, the announcement of his name by the stadium presenter before kick-off was met with boos and whistles from the Atletico supporters.

The reaction intensified when he came on in the second half, with the forward greeted by a loud chorus of disapproval. His visible frustration on the pitch added to the tension surrounding his appearance.

At the end of the match, Atletico’s players went across to acknowledge the home fans. Alvarez, however, went straight back to the dressing room rather than joining his team-mates.

That decision was reportedly made on the club’s instructions, with Atletico seeking to protect the player and prevent him from being exposed to further anger from the supporters.

According to Cadena SER, the circumstances are now starting to create discontent inside the Atletico dressing room.

Manager Diego Simeone and the rest of the squad have shown their full support for Alvarez in public. Privately, however, the situation is understood to be viewed differently. Team-mates are reportedly uncomfortable with the forward’s conduct, which has made his deep unhappiness increasingly apparent.

They have not abandoned their colleague, but they believe the continuing story surrounding Alvarez, together with his behaviour, could have serious consequences for the team. That concern is particularly strong before matches played at the Metropolitano, where the focus on the player risks becoming a distraction.

The events against Villarreal appeared to underline those fears. The tension surrounding the 2022 World Cup winner did little to help Atletico, while some sections of the crowd seemed more interested in reacting to Alvarez than in encouraging the team.

His return to the stadium has therefore become the dominant issue around the club, overshadowing an otherwise lively league fixture and the individual performance of Mikautadze.

Atletico’s official position remains firm: a sale to Barcelona is considered highly unlikely. However, the club could be prepared to listen if Arsenal were to submit an attractive offer.

For now, Alvarez remains at the centre of an increasingly difficult situation. The manager and his team-mates continue to offer public protection, but the reaction from supporters and the growing unease within the dressing room have left Atletico facing an issue that appears to be affecting the whole squad.
