Rulani Mokwena begins Pyramids FC reign with convincing win

Rulani Mokwena made a winning start as Pyramids FC manager as his side opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory away to Ghazl El Mahalla.

The South African coach took charge after the departure of Croatian manager Krunoslav Jurcic, who guided Pyramids FC to four trophies during his time at the club. His achievements included leading the team to their first-ever CAF Champions League title, secured by beating Mamelodi Sundowns last season.

Mokwena’s first match in charge produced an ideal result, with Pyramids FC controlling the contest and earning a comfortable victory on the road.

The visitors had to wait until the closing stages of the first half to break the deadlock. Odeh Fakhoury put Pyramids FC ahead after 41 minutes, giving Mokwena’s side a narrow advantage at the interval.

Pyramids FC extended their lead in the second half when Nasser Maher scored in the 67th minute. Mahmoud Zalaka then completed the scoring 10 minutes later to seal a convincing opening-day win.

The result leaves Pyramids FC top of the table after the first round of matches, although they are level on points with record champions Al Ahly. Al Ahly also began their campaign with a victory, beating El Sharkia Enppi 3-2.

Defending league champions Zamalek were unable to claim three points in their opening fixture. They were held to a 0-0 draw by Al-Ittihad.

Mokwena will not have long to reflect on his successful introduction to the Pyramids FC job, with the team returning to action on Thursday. Their next opponents will be Abu Qir Fertilizers, before Pyramids FC face Al-Masry the following Monday.

The former manager’s departure means Mokwena has inherited a team coming off a landmark season. Jurcic’s four trophies included the club’s historic CAF Champions League triumph over Mamelodi Sundowns, but the new coach has immediately made a positive impression with a strong away performance.

Pyramids FC’s early position at the top of the table is based on goal difference, with Al Ahly also taking three points from their first match. The opening results have placed the two clubs together at the summit, while Zamalek dropped points after their goalless draw.
