Rulani Mokwena can lead Pyramids to Egyptian league title – Former Zamalek star Tarik Yahya

Former Zamalek star Tarik Yahya has backed head coach Rulani Mokwena to guide Pyramids FC to the Egyptian Premier League title this season.

Pyramids made an impressive start to their campaign on Saturday, beating Ghazl El Mahalla 3-0 to claim maximum points in their opening league fixture.

The Cairo-based club finished runners-up to Zamalek in the Egyptian Premier League last season, while also lifting the CAF Champions League title in 2025.

Despite their recent success, Pyramids have yet to win the domestic league title, having narrowly missed out in recent campaigns.

Yahya believes Mokwena’s side are now better placed than both Zamalek and defending champions Al Ahly to challenge for the championship.

“Pyramids FC is calm, there are no financial issues or player problems, and there are no fans putting pressure on them. They are relaxed, but the results need to be a bit different,” Yahya said, according to Ysscore.

The former Zamalek player believes Pyramids must turn their strong position into silverware after falling short in the previous two seasons.

“Pyramids squandered the league last year and the year before that. The current squad must win the league, and Pyramids have taken the place of Al Ahly right now,” he added.

Yahya also praised Mokwena, who took charge of Pyramids during the current off-season, and expressed confidence that the South African coach can make a significant impact.

“The South African coach Mokwena is a good coach, and we hope to see his impact with the team soon. He has brought in the signings we needed,” Yahya said.

Mokwena arrived at Pyramids after establishing a strong reputation in South African football, having led Mamelodi Sundowns before moving to Egyptian football.

With Pyramids already starting the season with a convincing victory, expectations will be high for Mokwena to deliver the club’s first Egyptian Premier League title and build on their recent success in continental football.
