Goretzka to undergo Aston Villa medical after full agreement is reached

Aston Villa have reached a full agreement to sign Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka, with the former Bayern Munich player expected to complete a medical before signing a two- or three-year contract with the club.

The deal was reported on Sunday by German Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg, who said final approval had been secured and the remaining details had been clarified.

Goretzka’s medical is expected to take place soon, after which the transfer to Aston Villa can be formally completed. The agreement covers all parties involved in the move, according to Plettenberg.

The 30-year-old midfielder is set to become the latest addition to Unai Emery’s squad after the Aston Villa manager made a personal intervention to help secure the transfer. Emery contacted Goretzka directly to explain the club’s plans and convince him to join the project at Villa Park.

Aston Villa accelerated their efforts over the past 72 hours as Emery looked to strengthen his midfield. The club’s increased activity came after their attempt to sign Joao Palhinha stalled.

Goretzka leaves Bayern Munich after eight seasons with the German club. During that time, he made 312 appearances and won seven Bundesliga titles, as well as the Champions League in 2020 and a number of other domestic and European honours.

His Bayern career ended this summer, bringing to a close a successful spell in which he established himself as an important midfielder for both club and country. He has also been part of the Germany set-up, having represented the national team during his career.

The move would give Emery another experienced option in central midfield as Aston Villa continue to build their squad during the summer transfer window. Goretzka’s arrival would also add a player with extensive Champions League and Bundesliga experience to a team managed by a coach who played a decisive role in persuading him to move to England.

The reported agreement follows an intense period of negotiations and means Aston Villa are now waiting for the medical and contract formalities before confirming the transfer.
