Harry Kane keeps Bayern Munich contract talks calm after Super Cup triumph
Harry Kane says there is no urgency over talks about extending his Bayern Munich contract, with the England captain insisting his attention is firmly on winning more trophies during the club’s new season.
Kane was speaking after Bayern Munich began their campaign by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to win the German Super Cup. The victory added another honour to a remarkable spell for the striker, who is now preparing to enter his fourth season with the Bundesliga club.
The 32-year-old has already won the Golden Boot, the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the German Super Cup during his time in Munich. He also scored six goals at the World Cup, helping England finish third.
Asked by Spanish newspaper Marca about his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, an award no Bayern Munich player has claimed for many years, Kane played down the importance of individual recognition.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was the last Bayern Munich player to win the prize.
“A new season has started, and it is nice to start it by winning a trophy like the Super Cup. It is true that last season was the best of my career, but I am now focused on the new season,” Kane said.
He added: “We have to fight for all the trophies again, including the Champions League. The Super Cup is the first trophy of four that we will fight for, and I hope we can continue in this way.”
Kane played the full final against Borussia Dortmund but was unable to score and did not produce the influential display that has become expected of him.
Despite that, his record since moving to Bayern Munich remains outstanding. He has scored 146 goals in 148 appearances for the club, underlining the impact he has made since leaving Tottenham.
His future has attracted further interest because of the possibility of a new contract, but Kane said discussions with Bayern Munich would take place without pressure.
“We’ll talk this week and next. We’ll just have an open discussion. We’re not in a hurry or panicking,” he said.
“My full focus is on Bayern Munich and the upcoming season. The talks will happen behind the scenes.”
Kane joined Bayern Munich after establishing himself as Tottenham’s record goalscorer and one of the Premier League’s most prolific forwards. His first season in Germany brought individual success but no major team trophy, before he helped Bayern Munich secure a series of honours in the period that followed.
The German Super Cup success against Borussia Dortmund means Bayern Munich have made an immediate start to their latest pursuit of domestic and European silverware. Kane’s stated priority is to help the club challenge again on every front, with the Champions League among the targets he identified.
For now, the striker says contract negotiations will remain separate from his efforts on the pitch, as Bayern Munich begin a season in which he will again be expected to lead their attack.
