Bayern Munich secure 12th German Super Cup as Dortmund fall short at home
Bayern Munich won the German Super Cup for a record-extending 12th time after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park.
The German champions and DFB-Pokal holders were competing as winners of both major domestic trophies last season, while Borussia Dortmund qualified as Bundesliga runners-up.
Nathaniel Brown opened the scoring for Bayern in the 28th minute. The ball reached the German full-back inside the penalty area and he struck a powerful left-footed shot beyond Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who was unable to get a hand to it.
Dortmund thought they had levelled before half-time when Ramy Bensebaini converted a cross from Julian Ryerson in the 41st minute. The goal was ruled out for offside after the referee reviewed the incident.
Bayern then doubled their advantage in the first minute of added time at the end of the opening period. Michael Olise collected a loose ball in midfield and drove forward into the Dortmund penalty area before producing a close-range left-footed finish.
The hosts began the second half with greater urgency and created a series of opportunities as they took control of the contest. Their pressure eventually brought a goal in the 75th minute, when Fabio Silva’s shot took a deflection off substitute Alphonso Davies after a low cross from Daniel Svensson.
The goal gave Dortmund renewed momentum, although Bayern improved their performance as the match progressed. Morocco international Ismael Saibari came on for Nathaniel Brown in the 81st minute.
Dortmund’s hopes of completing the comeback suffered another blow in the 90th minute when Bensebaini was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Saibari.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Dortmund came close to equalising in the third minute of added time. Maximilian Beier found himself one-on-one with Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but lifted his effort over the crossbar from a promising position.
Bayern held on to secure the trophy, although the final score was 2-1 rather than the 2-0 advantage they had established through Brown and Olise.
The result gives Bayern another domestic trophy and extends their record in the German Super Cup, while Dortmund were left to reflect on missed opportunities after a strong second-half display. Their disallowed first-half goal, Bensebaini’s dismissal and Beier’s late miss proved decisive in a match that had appeared to be moving towards a different outcome when the hosts began to dominate after the interval.
