Wydad Casablanca explore Riyad Mahrez move as ambitious transfer remains uncertain
Wydad Casablanca have begun examining the possibility of signing Riyad Mahrez, but the proposed move is still at the information-gathering stage and is a long way from becoming a formal transfer negotiation.
According to Winwin, the Algeria international was put forward to the Moroccan club through an agent. Mahrez’s name represents an attractive and prestigious option for Wydad, although there has been no direct contact between the club and either the player or his representatives so far.
Wydad Casablanca have instead sought to establish the financial conditions that would be required for a deal. Their initial enquiries are intended to determine whether recruiting the former Manchester City player is realistically within the club’s reach.
No agreement has been reached and no concrete offer has reportedly been made. At this stage, Wydad are simply trying to understand whether a move for Mahrez can be considered seriously before taking the matter any further.
The main difficulty is the level of the market in which Mahrez continues to operate. The Algeria international remains highly regarded and is still attracting interest from several prominent clubs.
AS Roma are among the European sides monitoring his situation, while clubs from Saudi Arabia are also reported to be interested. Those clubs would have considerably greater financial resources than Wydad Casablanca, making it difficult for the Moroccan side to compete if the transfer develops into a wider contest.
For Wydad, the arrival of Mahrez would represent a major statement both on the pitch and in terms of publicity. His signing would bring significant sporting impact and would inevitably attract considerable attention. However, the club currently appears to have limited room to compete with potential rivals whose financial capabilities are substantially stronger.
The interest will nevertheless remain appealing to Wydad supporters, who can continue to imagine Mahrez wearing the club’s colours. But the current situation does not suggest that a transfer is close to completion.
Instead, the approach should be viewed as an initial assessment of the possibility of a deal. Wydad Casablanca have made enquiries about the financial demands involved, but they have not opened negotiations with Mahrez or his entourage, reached an agreement or submitted a formal offer.
The player’s name circulating around the club therefore reflects an enticing possibility rather than an imminent signing. Until Wydad can establish whether they are able to meet the conditions required, the proposed move remains highly complicated and uncertain.
