Hull City stun Manchester United with 2-0 win on Premier League comeback

Hull City began their return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence by beating Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday, delivering a deserved victory that ended the optimism building around Michael Carrick’s team after last season’s revival.

The promoted side made the stronger start at the MKM Stadium and were rewarded in the 17th minute. Senne Lammens could only parry Oli McBurnie’s effort from a corner, allowing Semi Ajayi to react quickest and turn the rebound into the net.

Hull continued to pose a threat from set-pieces and doubled their advantage seven minutes before half-time. Regan Slater’s free-kick found the penalty area, where Nobel Mendy rose above the United defence to head beyond Lammens and send the home supporters into raptures.

Manchester United had no convincing response to Hull’s pressure and became the first side to lose to a newly promoted team in a season opener, having previously avoided defeat in that fixture.

Carrick’s side struggled to create clear opportunities throughout the match, despite the introduction of Marcus Rashford in the second half. Rashford was making his first appearance for Manchester United since December 2024 and offered occasional signs of promise, but he could not inspire a comeback.

Bryan Mbeumo came closest to giving the visitors a route back into the contest in the 78th minute. His effort from a central position was saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis, who otherwise had a quiet afternoon as Hull’s defence dealt comfortably with Manchester United’s attempts to respond.

The result will be a major boost for Hull City as they begin life back in the top flight, while Manchester United’s opening-day defeat cuts through the confidence that had surrounded the club following their improvement last season.

United had arrived in Hull with expectations raised after Carrick galvanised a squad that had been short of confidence. He took charge after replacing Ruben Amorim in January and guided Manchester United to a third-place finish last season.

That revival had created a sense of renewed belief around the club, but Hull exposed weaknesses in the visitors’ performance with their aggressive start and effective use of set-pieces.

For Hull, the victory was built on disciplined defending as well as the early goals. Once Mendy headed in the second, United found few openings and were unable to apply sustained pressure on the hosts.

Lammens was required to make the important save from Mbeumo, but Hull’s goalkeeper otherwise watched from relative comfort as his team protected their advantage and completed a memorable Premier League return.
