Ireland and Nigeria midfielder Roland Idowu starts new chapter with FC Botosani

Ireland and Nigeria midfielder Roland Idowu has joined Romanian club FC Botosani from Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

The 24-year-old central midfielder has signed a contract running until 31 May 2027, moving from Scotland’s top flight to Romania’s SuperLiga. The transfer was completed on 21 August, with no fee disclosed for the move.

Idowu arrives at Botosani after helping St Mirren win the Scottish League Cup during the 2025-26 season. He made four appearances in the competition and scored once as the Paisley club lifted the trophy.

The Dublin-born player had also begun the new campaign with St Mirren before switching clubs. He featured twice in the Premiership, providing one assist, and appeared four times in the Scottish League Cup, scoring once.

Idowu spent the 2024-25 season with St Mirren after joining on loan from Shrewsbury. He returned to the Scottish club permanently in July 2025 and went on to be part of their League Cup-winning squad.

His move to Shrewsbury followed a spell with Waterford FC, where he helped the club secure promotion to the first league in the 2022-23 season. He joined the English club at the start of 2024 after leaving Waterford.

Earlier in his career, Idowu played for Bohemians, Cardiff City Under-23s and Southampton Under-18s. He moved to Waterford from Bohemians in January 2022, with both that transfer and his earlier switch from Cardiff recorded as free transfers.

A right-footed midfielder, Idowu gives Botosani a player with experience in both the Scottish and Irish games. His arrival also marks a move into a fresh league after three seasons connected with St Mirren, including a loan spell and a subsequent permanent return.

Idowu’s contract with FC Botosani runs through the end of May 2027, and he has now completed his move from St Mirren to the Romanian club.
