Wadi Degla and ZED FC begin Egyptian Premier League with goalless draw
Wadi Degla and ZED FC opened their Egyptian Premier League campaigns with a goalless draw, repeating the scoreline recorded by Wadi Degla at the start of last season.
Neither side could find a breakthrough in a match in which both teams produced five shots. The two goalkeepers were prominent throughout, with their performances helping to preserve a 0-0 result.
Wadi Degla goalkeeper Amr Hossam was named player of the match after making four saves. His display was central to keeping ZED FC from scoring as the visitors began the new league campaign with a point.
The result echoed Wadi Degla’s opening fixture from the previous season, when they also drew 0-0. On that occasion, their match was against Pyramids, meaning the club has now started successive league seasons with goalless draws.
Wadi Degla finished last season at the top of the relegation-avoidance phase with 53 points. ZED FC ended that phase in second place on 49 points.
Despite that league position, ZED FC have also secured a place in the CAF Confederation Cup. Their qualification came after they finished runners-up in the Egypt Cup, losing 2-1 to Pyramids.
Pyramids’ participation in the CAF Champions League allowed ZED FC, as Egypt Cup runners-up, to take the available place in the Confederation Cup. Their continental campaign will begin in the qualifying play-off, where they are scheduled to face Djibouti Telecom.
For now, however, ZED FC and Wadi Degla must settle for a share of the points after an opening match decided by the goalkeepers rather than the attackers. Five shots apiece reflected a contest in which neither side created enough to break through, while Amr Hossam’s four saves earned him individual recognition as the standout performer.
