Egypt seek September friendly as Football Association contacts Tanzania, Ghana and Rwanda

Egypt are seeking a friendly match during September’s international break, with the Football Association contacting Tanzania, Ghana and Rwanda about arranging a fixture.

The Egyptian Football Association has approached the three national federations and is waiting to reach an agreement with one of them, according to information obtained by FilGoal.com.

Egypt national team director Ibrahim Hassan said preparations for a friendly were being discussed, with work on the proposed match expected to continue in the coming hours.

The fixture would form part of Egypt’s preparations for their opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Egypt begin their Group B schedule against Angola at Cairo Stadium at 22:00 local time on 25 September.

They then travel to Juba to face South Sudan on 29 September, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 Cairo time.

Egypt are in Group B alongside Angola, South Sudan and Malawi. Their pursuit of a warm-up match reflects the limited time available around the opening round of qualifying, with the Football Association considering one of the three teams already contacted as potential opposition.

No agreement has yet been reached, and the identity of Egypt’s opponents for the friendly will depend on the outcome of the discussions between the federations.

Egypt remain the most successful team in Africa Cup of Nations history, having won the competition seven times. Their most recent campaign ended with a fourth-place finish at the 2025 tournament in Morocco.

The national side also reached the last 16 of the World Cup before being eliminated by Argentina. The tournament result adds to the recent competitive experience of a squad now preparing for the next stage of Africa Cup of Nations qualification.

The September camp will therefore include Egypt’s first two Group B fixtures, with a friendly potentially scheduled before or around those matches if an agreement can be reached with Tanzania, Ghana or Rwanda.
