AC Milan sign Diego Moreira from Strasbourg in club’s second-biggest transfer

AC Milan have completed the signing of Belgium international Diego Moreira from French club Strasbourg during the current summer transfer window in a deal reportedly worth €50m plus add-ons.

The 22-year-old has signed a contract with the Italian club running until 30 June 2031. AC Milan have also confirmed that Moreira will wear the number 22 shirt.

The transfer, first reported by Sky Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, is the second-most expensive in AC Milan’s history. Only Goncalo Ramos’ move from Paris Saint-Germain, completed earlier this summer for €74m, has cost the club more.

Moreira becomes the latest addition to an AC Milan squad that has also been strengthened during the current transfer window by the arrivals of Goncalo Ramos, Mario Gila and Seko Fofana.

The Belgian forward began his football education in the youth systems of Belgian side Standard Liege and Portuguese club Benfica. He played an important role as Benfica won the UEFA Youth League in the 2021-22 season before helping the club claim the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup.

He made his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League during the following campaign, featuring for Benfica in the qualifying rounds of the 2022-23 competition.

Moreira joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and made his first-team debut on 30 August of that year in a Carabao Cup match against AFC Wimbledon.

He moved to French club Olympique Lyonnais during the 2023-24 season before completing a permanent transfer to Strasbourg in the summer of 2024. His performances there established him as one of the brightest young talents in Ligue 1.

Moreira represented Portugal at several youth levels before switching allegiance to Belgium at senior international level. He went on to feature for Belgium at the 2024 World Cup.

During the previous season, Moreira played 42 matches for Strasbourg, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. Across his time with the club, he made 76 appearances, scored seven goals and created 16 more.

He has won four senior caps for Belgium but has yet to score or provide an assist for the national team.
