Lionel Messi ‘expressing himself’ on pitch, says Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos

Lionel Messi is beginning to regain his composure following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, earlier this month, according to Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos.

Hoyos said the Argentina captain appeared to be in a better condition on the pitch and was using football as a way to express himself during a difficult period away from the game.

“(Messi) seems to be in good shape, expresses himself on the pitch, which is where he feels most comfortable, and also seems calmer,” Hoyos said in comments carried by Reuters.

Messi returned to action for Inter Miami last week, coming on as a substitute against Leon in the Leagues Cup. The competition features clubs from Major League Soccer and Liga MX.

Inter Miami suffered a 3-2 defeat in that match, but Messi was then named in the starting line-up for Sunday’s meeting with Nashville. The club endured another heavy loss, going down 4-1.

Despite those results, Hoyos believes the 38-year-old is showing signs of emotional progress through his involvement with the team.

Messi published a heartfelt tribute to his father last week. In the message, he described Jorge as his father, friend and agent, and said he did not know how he would continue his life without him.

Jorge Messi played a major role in his son’s career and was closely involved in managing his affairs. His death came during a demanding period for Lionel Messi, who has continued to feature for Inter Miami despite his bereavement.

Inter Miami midfielder Casemiro also praised Messi’s dedication to the club and his team-mates after the defeat by Leon.

“He is an exceptional role model. He is undoubtedly going through an extremely difficult period, but the commitment he has shown, not only to his team-mates but also to the club, has been astonishing. I have never seen anything like it throughout my career,” Casemiro said.

Messi’s return against Leon marked his first appearance for Inter Miami since his father’s death. Although he started on the bench, he was involved in the match before being selected from the beginning against Nashville four days later.

Hoyos’ assessment offers an insight into Messi’s condition as Inter Miami continue their Leagues Cup campaign. The coach said the forward looked increasingly calm in the environment where he has traditionally felt most comfortable: on the football field.

Messi remains the central figure in Inter Miami’s team, and his decision to resume playing has been viewed by those around the club as evidence of his commitment during a deeply personal period.
