Mamelodi Sundowns coach Shuaib Walters steps up UEFA B studies in Scotland
Mamelodi Sundowns development goalkeeping coach Shuaib Walters has continued his coaching education by attending the UEFA B coaching course in Scotland, hosted by the Scottish Football Association.
The former professional goalkeeper, who leads the goalkeeping department within Sundowns’ development structures at Chloorkop, shared details of the course on social media as he joined candidates from around the world working towards the same qualification.
The programme combined classroom learning, practical training and a live match visit. Walters and the other candidates attended a game together before returning to the classroom for a session on match analysis, giving them the opportunity to connect the theory of coaching with observations from a competitive fixture.
“Group of random individuals from around the world with passion for football become candidates for UEFA B coaching licence. Then decide to go watch a match as a group,” Walters wrote on X.
The course also featured sessions on the pitch, where Walters took part alongside the other candidates. Footage shared by the former goalkeeper showed that he remains capable of contributing during practical exercises, despite having moved into coaching.
“Rolling back the years, in case you thought the first one was a fluke,” he posted with the video.
Walters later recorded the end of the second phase of the UEFA B course and thanked the Scottish FA and the coaches responsible for delivering the programme.
“Last session Phase 2 UEFA B. Thank you Scottish FA,” he wrote.
The latest stage of his development follows a playing career that included selection for South Africa’s squad at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he was a reserve goalkeeper.
Since retiring from playing, Walters has moved into coaching and focused on the development of goalkeepers. His professional profile identifies him as a CAF A candidate and also lists him as a former South Africa U17 national team goalkeeper coach.
He joined the Mamelodi Sundowns academy setup in 2024 and took responsibility for helping to develop the club’s young goalkeepers. His work at Chloorkop places him at the centre of the club’s efforts to prepare emerging players for the next stage of their careers.
The UEFA B course in Scotland represents another step in that process. By combining his previous experience as a professional goalkeeper with continued formal coaching education, Walters is building his qualifications while working directly with the next generation of shot-stoppers at Mamelodi Sundowns.
The course brought together participants from different parts of the world, with Walters documenting both the shared learning experience and the practical demands of the programme. His posts also highlighted the balance between group activities, match analysis and on-field coaching work that formed part of the second phase.
