Aston Villa win race for Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki after PSG talks break down

Aston Villa have completed the permanent signing of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma after Paris Saint-Germain withdrew from negotiations for the 24-year-old.

The Premier League club confirmed the deal on Wednesday, bringing to an end a transfer saga in which Suzuki had appeared close to joining the French champions during the current summer transfer window.

Paris Saint-Germain had reached an agreement with Parma and the player’s representatives on a package worth about 35m euros. However, the proposed move collapsed at the final stage after a dispute over finances.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, PSG decided to abandon the deal when Suzuki’s representatives requested an additional commission of almost 3m euros. The club rejected the demand and reportedly viewed it as “blackmail”.

The report added that Paris Saint-Germain officials attempted to contact Suzuki directly, but his advisers prevented him from responding. The European champions subsequently decided to close the matter permanently.

Aston Villa moved quickly to take advantage of the breakdown in negotiations. They submitted an offer similar to the one made by PSG, secured Suzuki’s approval and finalised the transfer before announcing it on Wednesday.

In a statement published on their official website, Aston Villa said Suzuki had joined from Parma on a permanent contract. The club also noted that he represented Japan at the 2026 World Cup.

Suzuki was born in the United States but grew up in the Japanese city of Urawa. He made his senior debut for Urawa Red Diamonds at the age of 16 before spending a short period with Belgian club Sint-Truiden.

He then moved to Parma, where he played in Serie A during the past two seasons. Aston Villa described the goalkeeper as one of the leading emerging talents in his position.

Suzuki has made 22 appearances for the Japan senior side. The club ended its announcement by welcoming him to Aston Villa and wishing him success during his time with the team.

The signing gives Aston Villa a goalkeeper who has already gained international experience at major tournament level, while also securing a player who had been the subject of serious interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
