Jamal Musiala says fainting episodes are treatable and pose no health risk
Jamal Musiala has revealed he has been diagnosed with temporary fainting episodes caused by a neurological disorder, after falling to the ground twice in Bayern Munich’s friendly matches in the space of two days.
The Bayern Munich and Spain forward said the condition could be treated easily and did not affect his everyday life. Musiala made the announcement in a statement posted on his official Instagram account.
“I have been diagnosed with temporary fainting episodes, but they can be treated easily and are caused by a neurological disorder,” he wrote.
“These episodes can lead to a loss of consciousness, as happened in my matches against Leipzig and Heidenheim, and they look frightening at first glance. But for me, they are part of my everyday life.”
Musiala added that he was receiving excellent medical care and remained optimistic about his recovery.
“I am receiving excellent medical care and I am very optimistic. Most importantly, there is no health risk,” he said.
The 22-year-old was forced to leave Bayern’s friendly against Heidenheim after collapsing on the pitch without any contact from another player. He fell in the 61st minute and was taken off eight minutes later following treatment from Bayern’s medical staff.
The incident came two days after Musiala had also collapsed during Bayern’s friendly against Leipzig.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the club was aware of Musiala’s medical condition but would not disclose details. He added that the player would explain the situation to supporters himself.
Musiala said he had discussed the matter regularly with doctors before deciding to continue playing.
“After continuous consultation with the doctors, my personal wish was to take on this challenge. After receiving approval from the neurologists, I had to continue focusing on what would help me most in my recovery,” he said.
“Simply to live my everyday life and play football normally. I take responsibility for that.”
Musiala also asked fans to respect his decision to keep details of the condition within his close circle and the club.
“I hope you understand my situation better now, and I ask you to understand my wish to keep this matter within the circle of people close to me and the club,” he said.
The statement followed growing attention around the two incidents, the latest of which saw Musiala leave the pitch after medical staff intervened. Bayern had previously declined to provide details of the condition, with Eberl saying Musiala would address the issue personally.
Musiala’s disclosure confirms that the episodes can involve temporary loss of consciousness, but he said they do not present a danger to his health and do not prevent him from continuing with his daily routine or football career.
