Jose Mourinho weighs attacking options as Real Madrid midfield selection takes centre stage

Jose Mourinho is facing his first major tactical challenge before the new season begins at Real Madrid, with the make-up of his midfield emerging as the biggest issue for the Portuguese manager. Mourinho wants to find a starting system that can accommodate Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva, but fitting all three into the same side without weakening the team defensively will be difficult.

Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Mourinho is still searching for the right balance between attacking quality and defensive security. Bellingham and Guler both prefer to operate as attacking midfielders, while Bernardo Silva is expected to take on a more creative central role, helping Real Madrid control the tempo of matches.

The challenge, according to the report, is not the individual ability of the three players but how they can be used together effectively. A midfield containing three players with strongly attacking instincts could leave greater spaces for opponents to exploit, particularly when Real Madrid lose possession.

Bellingham is regarded as the leading option to play behind Kylian Mbappe. His importance to the team, combined with his ability to make late runs into the penalty area and contribute goals, makes him a natural candidate for the position.

However, Guler has impressed in the same role during pre-season preparations. His understanding with Mbappe has also given him a clear attacking advantage, creating a direct competition for the position behind the France captain.

Mourinho is meanwhile planning to use Bernardo as the midfielder responsible for creating from deeper areas. That approach would give Real Madrid an additional source of control and invention in the centre of the pitch, but it also increases the need for a player capable of protecting the defence and covering the spaces left by the attacking players.

Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are the leading options to provide that defensive support. Mourinho will need one of them, or a similar holding presence, to anchor the midfield if he decides to field Bellingham, Guler and Bernardo together.

Marca says Mourinho recognises that the season will be long and that his team will require several different combinations as the campaign develops. The manager is nevertheless continuing to search for a formula that will allow Real Madrid to exploit the trio’s considerable attacking ability while retaining their defensive structure.

The midfield decision is expected to be one of the main issues Mourinho must settle as the new season approaches. Finding the right balance could prove crucial to Real Madrid’s hopes of competing for every available trophy.
