Thapelo Maseko targets success after joining FC Copenhagen

Thapelo Maseko says he is determined to make a lasting impression at FC Copenhagen after completing a four-year move from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 22-year-old was presented by the Danish club on Tuesday after FC Copenhagen agreed a transfer fee of R28m for his services. Maseko will wear the number 12 shirt as he begins the next stage of his career.

Maseko said the move represented a significant personal achievement and made clear that he had arrived with the ambition of helping FC Copenhagen win trophies.

“I am very proud of this agreement,” Maseko told the club media department. “It is a dream come true. To me, FC Copenhagen is a very special club.

“They are a club that is highly recognised internationally, and[Sibusiso] Zumahas told me so many great things about the club, the fans, and the city. I am looking forward to experiencing it all myself.

“I am truly honoured to get this opportunity, and it fills me with hunger and ambition. I have come here to make a difference and leave my mark on the club. I have big ambitions for the club and on a personal level. I come here to win, and I am very excited to get out on the pitch and give everything I’ve got.”

The winger’s move brings an end to his time with Mamelodi Sundowns and gives him the opportunity to continue his development in Denmark. He said the reputation of FC Copenhagen, as well as the recommendations of Sibusiso Zuma, had helped shape his positive view of the club.

Maseko also highlighted his eagerness to experience life in the Danish capital, including meeting the supporters and becoming familiar with his new surroundings. His comments underline the level of expectation he has placed on himself during the four-year agreement.

FC Copenhagen coach Bo Svensson believes Maseko’s pace, direct style and ability in one-on-one situations will provide the team with an additional attacking threat.

“In Thapelo we get an explosive, dynamic player with exceptional qualities in direct one-on-one situations. His pace and ability to challenge his direct opponent will make him a constant threat in behind, but he can also use his left foot to assist teammates when cutting inside,” Svensson said.

“There are naturally still elements to refine, but Thapelo’s potential is high, and he always works tirelessly for the team, so we are really looking forward to working with him daily.”

Svensson acknowledged that there are aspects of Maseko’s game that still need to be improved, but praised the player’s potential and his willingness to contribute defensively and collectively.

The coach’s assessment suggests FC Copenhagen expect Maseko to offer more than speed in attack. His ability to take on defenders, run in behind and create opportunities with his left foot is likely to form a key part of the qualities the club hopes he will bring.

Maseko, meanwhile, has made his own priorities clear: he wants to win, give everything on the pitch and leave a mark during his time at FC Copenhagen.
