Marcelo Allende commits to Mamelodi Sundowns but hints at possible final season
Marcelo Allende says he will remain with Mamelodi Sundowns despite speculation about his future, although the Chilean midfielder has suggested the upcoming campaign may be his last at the club.
The 26-year-old addressed the uncertainty on Monday afternoon while speaking to the media before Sundowns’ Betway Premiership match against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday.
Allende, who joined the South African club in 2022, said he was concentrating solely on his current responsibilities and had not discussed a move with any potential suitors.
However, his description of the campaign as his “last year” at Chloorkop has added to questions about whether he intends to continue beyond the end of the season.
“I’m focused on my last year here at the club. I haven’t spoken to anyone. As I have said, I’m really focused, from everywhere (all angles),” Allende said.
“I need to play; I will always give my 100%. If not, I also support my teammates because I think it is the most important thing at Sundowns so that we bring good things to the club.”
Allende has established himself as an important part of Mamelodi Sundowns since moving from Chile. He has made 74 appearances for the club and scored seven goals.
His ability to operate in different positions, combined with his technical quality, has made him a valuable member of Miguel Cardoso’s squad. At the same time, the depth of talent available to the Sundowns manager means Allende faces strong competition for a place in the starting team.
The midfielder’s spell in South Africa has already brought considerable success. Last season, he helped the Brazilians reach the CAF Champions League title, with Sundowns securing the competition for the second time.
That triumph added another significant honour to a period in which Allende has played an important role for the club since his arrival.
At international level, Allende has represented Chile at Under-17 and Under-20 level. He has also won one senior cap for his country.
For now, the midfielder is attempting to move the focus away from transfer speculation and towards Sundowns’ campaign. His comments indicate that he remains committed to contributing on the pitch, while also supporting his team-mates whenever he is not selected.
His admission that this could be his final season at Chloorkop means his performances may attract particular attention over the months ahead. Each appearance could take on greater importance if he does depart at the end of the campaign.
Allende will hope to finish his time with Mamelodi Sundowns in style if this does prove to be his final season. Having helped the club conquer Africa last season, he will be aiming to contribute to another successful chapter before his future becomes clearer.
