Independence Stadium set to host Gambia’s 2027 AFCON qualifiers after provisional approval
The Gambia’s Independence Stadium is on course to return to the international football calendar after being barred by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from hosting international matches for failing to meet the required standards.
The country’s biggest football venue is expected to stage The Gambia’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying home matches, as well as the second leg of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie between Medina United and Star Sports Academy next month.
The development represents a potentially significant breakthrough for Gambian football, with the stadium having been unavailable for international fixtures following CAF’s decision.
CAF inspection to determine stadium’s future
Sources indicate that the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has been informed by CAF about the planned return of international football to the Independence Stadium.
As part of the process, CAF is expected to dispatch an inspector to the venue during the upcoming international fixtures.
The inspection will focus on the organisation and operational standards of the matches, with CAF assessing whether the stadium now meets the requirements needed to host games at continental level.
A satisfactory assessment could pave the way for the Independence Stadium to receive full CAF approval and regain its status as a venue for international matches.
Home advantage back in sight
The possible reinstatement of the Independence Stadium would be a major boost for The Gambia, particularly the national team, which has had to play international fixtures away from home because of the venue’s ban.
The return of the stadium would allow the Scorpions to welcome opponents on home soil during the 2027 AFCON qualifiers while also giving Gambian clubs the opportunity to host continental matches in the country.
For Medina United, the Champions League preliminary-round second leg against Star Sports Academy could provide the first major test of the stadium’s readiness.
Beyond the immediate fixtures, CAF’s approval would restore an important footballing asset to The Gambia and potentially provide the national team and domestic clubs with the advantage of playing decisive international matches in familiar surroundings.
The upcoming fixtures and CAF inspection will therefore be closely watched as Gambian football seeks to complete the stadium’s return to continental competition.
