Napoli continue talks to sign Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus as £17m demand stalls deal

Napoli are continuing negotiations to sign Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus, but the proposed transfer remains complicated by the English club’s demand for a €20m fee.

The Italian club have increased their efforts to reach an agreement for the Brazil international after reducing their wage commitments. Romelu Lukaku’s move to Fenerbahce means Napoli are no longer paying the Belgian striker’s substantial salary, giving them greater scope to pursue Jesus.

However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, talks have yet to produce a breakthrough because Arsenal are insisting on receiving €20m for the player’s departure.

Jesus is entering the final year of his contract with Arsenal, a situation Napoli hope will help them negotiate a lower fee. The Italian side believe the length of the remaining agreement should influence Arsenal’s valuation as they continue discussions over the transfer.

The 28-year-old earns approximately €6m per year at Arsenal. That salary is another factor Napoli must consider as they assess whether the deal can be completed on terms acceptable to both clubs.

Napoli are also examining alternative options in case Arsenal maintain their financial demands and the move for Jesus breaks down. The club’s search for another solution reflects the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations, with the transfer still dependent on Arsenal’s willingness to reduce their asking price.

Jesus joined Arsenal in 2022 after leaving Manchester City. He has since been part of the London club’s forward options, although his most recent campaign produced limited numbers, with the Brazilian making 14 appearances and scoring three goals.

Napoli’s interest has therefore led to continued talks rather than an agreement, while Arsenal’s €20m valuation remains the main obstacle. The Italian club are pressing ahead with negotiations, but they are also preparing for the possibility that the financial gap cannot be resolved.
