Rafik Messali races to be fit for Toulouse’s Ligue 1 opener
Rafik Messali is facing a race against time to be fit for Toulouse’s Ligue 1 opener against Lyon after another injury interrupted his pre-season preparations.
The 23-year-old Algerian striker has not featured for Toulouse since their friendly against Rodez on 25 July. His absence continued into Saturday’s meeting with Hamburg, which was the club’s final pre-season fixture before the league campaign begins.
Messali’s latest setback is understood to be minor, but Toulouse are taking a cautious approach to his recovery. The forward has recently returned to intensive individual training as he works towards regaining full fitness.
His return to team training is now getting closer, although precautions remain necessary. Toulouse will hope that progress continues quickly enough for Messali to be considered for their opening Ligue 1 fixture against Olympique Lyonnais on 22 August.
The match represents an important potential deadline for the forward, who is eager to put a difficult period of injuries behind him and finally establish some consistency in his career.
Messali endured three separate injuries last season, with his final setback preventing him from being considered for a place in Algeria’s World Cup squad.
Injuries have been a recurring problem throughout his development. The striker previously underwent two cruciate ligament operations, setbacks that disrupted his progress at an early stage of his career.
Despite those difficulties, Messali’s ability has continued to attract recognition. He had been close to earning his first Algeria Under-20 call-up before another injury once again interrupted his progress.
His limited involvement at senior level also highlights the impact of those setbacks. Since becoming a professional, Messali has made only 30 appearances for Toulouse across the past three seasons.
The immediate objective is therefore straightforward: regain his physical condition, complete a consistent run of training and then build up his match fitness without suffering another setback.
Toulouse will not want to rush the forward back before he is ready, particularly with a long season ahead. Although a return against Lyon remains possible, the priority is for Messali to recover fully and begin rebuilding the consistency that has been missing from his career.
After another disrupted pre-season, the Algerian will now hope to turn the page and finally make the 2026-27 campaign the season in which he can regularly show the ability that Toulouse have seen in him.
