Rodri’s Barcelona move gives Deco a statement signing in battle with Real Madrid
Barcelona’s signing of Rodri has been described as a major blow to Real Madrid, with the Spain midfielder having previously been regarded as one of the leading candidates to strengthen their squad. His move to the Catalan club has prompted a strong reaction in Spain and could alter the balance of power between the country’s two biggest sides.
Joan Vehils, editor-in-chief of Catalan newspaper Sport, said Rodri’s arrival represented a significant setback for Real Madrid in an article titled “Barcelona already have what Madrid want”.
The midfielder had been viewed as a potential solution to the position that has generated the greatest uncertainty within Real Madrid’s squad. However, according to Vehils, Rodri offers Barcelona much more than an upgrade in one particular area.
The writer described him as a player capable of changing the way an entire team operates. Rodri’s ability to provide balance, direct play and control the tempo of matches makes him, in Vehils’ view, a natural starter for any elite club.
Rodri’s importance, he argued, extends beyond his customary duties of winning possession and helping to build attacks. His influence also affects the character of a team and its ability to dominate the biggest matches, meaning the transfer should not be regarded simply as the addition of another player to Barcelona’s squad.
Vehils also praised Barcelona sporting director Deco for completing the deal. He said Deco had closed an operation that could mark the beginning of a new era at the club while giving Barcelona a significant boost in their pursuit of every major trophy.
The article also acknowledged other encouraging developments within the Barcelona squad. Egyptian forward Hamza has continued to impress in front of goal, while Bseyo, the new arrival from Brugge, has scored twice during pre-season.
Those performances have increased optimism about Barcelona’s attacking options, although Vehils warned that they do not resolve the club’s need for a recognised centre-forward.
Barcelona still require reinforcement in that position, he said, while uncertainty continues to surround the proposed transfer of Julian Alvarez. The future of that deal remains unclear, leaving the central striker position as an outstanding issue for the club despite the progress made elsewhere in the squad.
Vehils said Barcelona’s activity in the transfer market showed the club now possessed “more resources, more alternatives and greater ambition” than it had demonstrated in recent years. He regarded Rodri’s arrival as the clearest evidence of that change.
The transfer, in his assessment, should not be reduced to a headline signing alone. It represents a clear statement of Barcelona’s intentions: the club have strengthened their team and secured one of the best midfielders in the world, a player who could otherwise have provided Real Madrid with a significant improvement.
Rodri’s switch therefore carries importance beyond Barcelona’s immediate plans. It gives the club a midfielder capable of controlling games at the highest level while denying Real Madrid a player who had been seen as a possible answer to one of their most pressing squad concerns.
