Alvarez stands firm on Barcelona ambition as Atletico weigh Arsenal option
Julian Alvarez has rejected the possibility of joining Arsenal despite a personal attempt by manager Mikel Arteta to persuade him, adding another twist to the Atletico Madrid forward’s uncertain future during the final days of the transfer window.
The development was reported by Basel Tabbal, beIN Sports’ Barcelona correspondent. According to Tabbal, Atletico Madrid would be willing to allow Alvarez to move to Arsenal, but the Argentina international remains opposed to that destination and continues to favour a switch to Barcelona.
That stance leaves Atletico facing an increasingly difficult situation. The Spanish club is prepared to consider a move to Arsenal, while Alvarez is determined to pursue what he regards as his preferred option. Barcelona remains the player’s first choice, although Atletico are reluctant to help strengthen a direct rival in La Liga.
The latest disagreement is part of a growing dispute between Alvarez and Atletico. The tension began when the striker, while on international duty with Argentina at the World Cup, expressed a desire to leave the club in order to fulfil what he described as “his dream”. Those comments were widely interpreted as an indication that he wanted to join Barcelona.
Alvarez subsequently said he had spoken to Atletico officials and others involved in decisions about his future. He indicated that he believed a departure would be the best outcome for everyone, opening the way for a wider contest for his signature.
Barcelona and Arsenal have both been linked with the forward, along with other clubs. However, Atletico’s position has made a move to Barcelona particularly difficult. The Madrid club does not want to facilitate Alvarez’s transfer to a team that competes directly with it in the Spanish top flight.
Arsenal, by contrast, represents a more acceptable destination from Atletico’s perspective. That difference helps explain why Arteta made a personal effort to sell the player on the English club’s project. Reports suggest Arsenal remain strongly interested in Alvarez, despite being aware that he would rather move to Barcelona.
The Premier League club has sought to take advantage of the complicated relationship between Alvarez and Atletico in an effort to secure the transfer. Its interest has continued even though the player’s preference is clear.
The situation has become more sensitive since Alvarez returned to training with Atletico. Spanish newspaper AS reported that the club expects the player to apologise and focus on working with the squad. The report also said Atletico have no intention of opening negotiations over a move to Barcelona, despite the continuing speculation surrounding the striker.
Barcelona therefore face several obstacles in their pursuit. The club regard Alvarez as one of their attacking targets and the player wants to wear the Barcelona shirt, but any agreement would first require Atletico to soften their stance. Barcelona must also overcome the financial demands of a deal that would place a significant burden on the club’s finances.
For now, Arsenal appear to offer Atletico a more straightforward route, but Alvarez’s refusal to consider that option has kept the transfer unresolved and left his next move dependent on whether Barcelona can overcome both Atletico’s resistance and the financial complications involved.
