Arsenal sweep aside Manchester City 3-0 to lift Community Shield

Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in emphatic fashion by beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday.

Martin Ødegaard lifted the trophy as the English champions produced a dominant display, strengthening their status as favourites to retain the title and offering new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca an immediate indication of the challenge ahead.

Arsenal needed only 24 seconds to take the lead. Myles Lewis-Skelly, selected in midfield despite reported interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, split the City defence with a precise pass.

Riccardo Calafiori raced on to the ball, took advantage of poor marking and calmly finished from 12 yards beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma. It was the quickest Community Shield goal since 1968.

Mikel Arteta’s side continued to overwhelm a disjointed City team and doubled their advantage in the 27th minute.

Martin Ødegaard was allowed time to deliver a cross towards the far post. Christos Tzolis, left unmarked by Abdukodir Khusanov, headed the ball back across the six-yard area, where Kai Havertz rose above Ruben Dias to score.

Arsenal’s intensity and attacking movement contrasted sharply with City’s lack of cohesion. England midfielder Elliott Anderson, making his first appearance for City in a showpiece match following his £116m move from Nottingham Forest, struggled to influence the contest.

Erling Haaland, City’s talisman, was largely anonymous and missed two promising opportunities before half-time.

Ødegaard added Arsenal’s third three minutes after the break. Tzolis rolled the ball into the captain’s path and the Norway international weaved through the City defence before dummying Donnarumma and finishing from close range.

The victory gave Arsenal a confident start to the season and allowed Arteta to showcase the club’s close-season signings in front of the Cardiff crowd.

Bruno Guimaraes, who joined from Newcastle for £75m, settled into midfield with ease. Tzolis, signed from Club Brugge for £34m, was lively throughout and ended the match with two assists.

Arsenal will begin the campaign as champions for the first time since the 2004-05 season. They are already widely regarded as the leading contenders to win consecutive English titles for the first time since the 1930s.

Their first Premier League fixture is at home to promoted Coventry at Emirates Stadium on 21 August. Manchester City begin their campaign at home against Bournemouth on 23 August.

The result represented a difficult first major test for Maresca, who was hand-picked to replace Pep Guardiola after leaving Chelsea in January following a turbulent reign of less than two seasons.

Guardiola won 20 trophies during a highly successful decade in Manchester, including the FA Cup and League Cup in his final season. However, City have not won the Premier League since 2024 and finished seven points behind Arsenal in second place last season.

Maresca now faces the task of reducing the gap between the clubs, with Sunday’s performance showing how much more dynamic and coordinated Arsenal appeared.

Arteta has said his players remain “hungry” for further success. Their motivation has also been strengthened by the disappointment of losing the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in May.

The Community Shield victory was Arsenal’s 18th. Only Manchester City, in 2019, have gone on to win the Premier League among the previous 15 winners of the season-opening match.

On the evidence of Arsenal’s commanding display in the Cardiff sunshine, Ødegaard may have further opportunities to lift silverware before the season is over.
