All Blacks overpower Bulls as Jeandre Rudolph earns KickOff Rugby’s man-of-the-match award

The All Blacks secured a 50-19 victory over the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening, but Jeandre Rudolph emerged as the standout performer for the Pretoria-based side despite their heavy defeat.

New Zealand’s success was their third win against a South African United Rugby Championship team. Although the Bulls produced occasional flashes of their attacking and defensive potential, they were ultimately unable to contain the visitors, who pulled clear on the scoreboard.

Rudolph was a powerful presence throughout the contest and was recognised by KickOff Rugby as the Bulls’ man of the match. The loose forward carried the ball with determination, made a series of important defensive contributions and won four turnovers during an energetic display.

He also played a key role in creating the Bulls’ try with an impressive blindside break from the base of a scrum. Rudolph’s burst opened space for the home side and provided one of the clearest examples of the impact he was able to make against the All Blacks.

The 21-year-old continued to work relentlessly across the field before his evening ended prematurely. He was forced to leave the match for a head injury assessment (HIA) with 15 minutes remaining.

Rudolph’s performance continues a strong record in the United Rugby Championship. He won 21 turnovers during the previous season, and his ability to compete at the breakdown was again evident against New Zealand.

Despite the defeat, the Bulls also had an excellent contribution from their captain, Marcell Coetzee. The skipper scored a try and matched the intensity of a physically demanding encounter, refusing to shy away from the heavy collisions that characterised the match.

The result leaves the All Blacks with another victory over opposition from South Africa’s United Rugby Championship sides, while the Bulls will reflect on a performance in which they showed moments of promise but were punished by New Zealand’s quality.

Rudolph’s display nevertheless provided a positive individual highlight for the home team. His ball-carrying, defensive work, turnover-winning and involvement in the Bulls’ try made him the leading contender for the award, while Coetzee’s try and committed performance also ensured he was among the strongest candidates.
