Zion Suzuki: Aston Villa step up pursuit of Japanese-Ghanaian goalkeeper

Aston Villa are stepping up their pursuit of Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as uncertainty over Emiliano Martinez’s future intensifies, with the club now considering a move worth around €30 million for the Japan international.

Suzuki, 23, has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Martinez if the Argentina goalkeeper completes his expected departure from Villa Park. The Premier League club had previously identified Suzuki and RC Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser as possible options.

Villa had initially told representatives of potential targets that Martinez would remain at the club this summer, despite the goalkeeper’s desire to join Juventus. The Serie A giants made several approaches for Martinez but Villa rejected small, incremental offers.

However, negotiations over Martinez’s departure have progressed, forcing Villa to reconsider their plans and turn their attention more firmly towards Suzuki.

Club sources believe Suzuki would favour a move to the Europa League winners, while his profile has also attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Martinez’s Villa future takes another twist

Villa’s previous stance on Martinez’s future was emphatic. Last month, the club’s director of football operations Damian Vidagany told 365scores that the 33-year-old would remain in the Midlands.

“The goalkeeper’s future is settled, he is staying with us, and we have no intention of letting him go this summer,” said Vidagany.

“The team needs his efforts and extensive experience, and he is a very important element in our project for next season.”

Martinez is not expected back for pre-season until Monday after Argentina’s World Cup campaign, leaving Villa to continue assessing the situation before his return.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper joined Villa in September 2020 and has made 256 appearances for the club. He played 44 matches in all competitions last season, including 32 of Villa’s 38 Premier League fixtures.

Suzuki’s rapid rise strengthens Villa interest

Suzuki has established himself as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Europe since moving to Parma in 2024.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother, Suzuki grew up in Japan and began his professional career with Urawa Red Diamonds before spending a season on loan in Belgium.

He joined Parma in the summer of 2024 and quickly became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, making 57 Serie A appearances across his first two seasons.

His reputation was further enhanced at this summer’s World Cup in North America, where he started all four of Japan’s matches. Japan were eliminated by Brazil in the round of 32 after Gabriel Martinelli scored a stoppage-time winner.

A Martinez departure would add to a major period of change at Villa Park, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne already gone and further uncertainty surrounding Ezri Konsa.

Villa are therefore increasingly viewing Suzuki as a potential long-term solution between the posts as they prepare for life after Martinez.
